I won’t be forgetting about absorption of shear in future for sure. I should also mention that it sits on three sorbothane feet too, but they weren’t enough on their own. Once my SL-7’s off the bench I’ll try it with same setup, but it never was as sensitive to vibration as this one.

I agree the turntable chassis will be a factor, whether damping or shaking. I hope your SL-7 is back on track soon. Mine is on a bamboo shelf in a rack.

I think the only thing left to do it figure out how to get it to stay shut since all the plastic part of the lid is gone. Any suggestions would be very welcome, I'm certainly puzzled how to proceed. The top and bottom parts are smooth aluminum, with a very strong spring trying to push them apart. The lack of a forward lid means that whatever I use will have to hold up against the greater force nearer the hinge. Before I took it out of circulation I was just putting a heavy rock on it. It was a perfectly good rock, but it would be nice to have a solution that's elegant in the other sense. I plan on holding on to this one for a while.

You could tape it down.

A man after my own heart. But since I'm going to have it for a while the cost of tape would eventually be too much

You could remove the springs.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that as a potential solution. I like that it's one less thing that could go wrong in the future...
It would mean that the tonearm's support isn't being held in place as firmly relative to the platter, but if there's a design that could handle that, this would be it. It would probably come down to the hinge and whether it all continues to move as a unit when vibrated. I'm guessing it does. (The SL-6 would not). Definitely an interesting idea.
