Hi Graham..........
    Take a look at Belleson super regulators they appear very very impressive ........ there is a youtube demo ...here    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4vsf-awHgM ;

Allot of enthusiasts with good electrical knowledge are reporting  excellent results ....... along the lines of the Naim descrete regulator improvements........ i wonder what this do to your already excellent products.....................

   Happy New Year
      Richard (I have no association with Belleson)

Very expensive aren't they?

Possibly they will improve on a discrete regulator in some applications (as seems to be inferred). Usually a 78XX regulator is quite good on noise. It would not be the noise I'd be worried about but the high frequency stability, which all regulator manufacturers conveniently ignore. All use an op-amp (this is no different), and op-amps do some weird things at very high frequencies. Those frequencies get superimposed on the amplifier stage's signal, and can change the character of the sound. This makes a difference, but a difference isn't always an improvement.

A notable improvement to most voltage regulators can be made by adding a small value resistor in series with the output, which can (and sometimes does) get rid of instability. If voltage accuracy is not so important this is a much cheaper way to an improvement.

This recently released regulator seems a good/economical step forward, albeit in SMD form.
So far I have only seen a negative voltage version from them.
