I listened to quite a few interpretations of this fantastic piece of music already and I always come back to Christian Ferras with Berlin Philharmonic (DG). No specious virtuosity, just wonderful musical sense and cantilena, especially in the 1st movement. Outstanding! Kory, have you already listened to that one?

I've just been getting reacquainted with the 3rd Symphony of Roy Harris. Seventeen (or so) minutes of concentrated wonder with the sound of the prairies and some great brass and tympani fugato. I've four recordings of this, from Koussevitzky's first recording of it in Boston, Howard Hanson's Rochester Mercury from the 50s, and a couple by Leonard Bernstein in New York. His later DG version has better sound than the 1960s CBS but the performance seems to me to be at a lower voltage. What the CBS recording does give you is a cinemascope sound stage that really suits the music. (This will certainly feature on my Classical You Tube channel at some point Wink).

Just received the new Analogue Productions, Bach Cello Suites with Janos Starker today and have listened all the way through.

It's a very quiet pressing and to my ears more natural sounding than the earlier Speakers Corner edition which seems a little forced.

Pricey but worth it IMHO. May be definitive.

Keith - I do wish you hadn't posted that link! Because I really want this now! LOL I have Pierre Fournier's 1961 Archiv recording on CD, but I know how good Analogue Productions records are . . .
