GS in SRG II review thread -
1/ dual output PSU1 type/replacement linear PS. 2/ utterly transparent linestage : buffered output, gain optional, 4 or 5 inputs, 2 outputs, dual mono stepped attenuators (or stereo and balance control but dual mono seems better to me). Inputs completely isolated from each other so no signal leakage across inputs, eg from constantly on tuner, possibly relay switched or signal and ground switched on rotary selector switch. Preferably one box with suitably shielded traffo. Size approximately 3 Solos wide, 1 deep and one high. High quality input power filtering, IEC socket. Prefer if all sockets are panel mount to reduce possibility of fractured solder joints from tight fitting plugs being taken off and on. |
What I would really like to see is a rekindling of interest in DIY audio-electronics in this land, somehow.Replies:

This is perhaps (no definitely) the wrong forum for it, but I've always wanted to build my own speakers, including cross-overs.... Why the frown Graham, it's still analogue, isn't it...? |

Nothing to do with DIY electronics directly, but if you're looking for a different type of challenge Graham, you can always write a little booklet called "The idiot's guide through the BS in Hi-Fi". A kind of a myth buster. You always seem to have a lot on your mind and looking for a way to express it and there are idiots like us too dumb (uninformed) to know the truth and too clever to believe the BS.
You can start by compiling this forum in a Q&A format and selling it as a product on its own or with your other products. People in Hi-Fi (let's call them audiophiles) interest stretches way beyond music and the enjoyment of it. We are inquisitive and technically inclined (or like to think we are), but in my search for knowledge I've never come across a candid little myth buster manual.
I (and many others) pick up myths in magazines and other forums and come back to this forum to bust them. So while you're sitting in the crazy hours of the mornings answering them, you may as well make some money off it...

Only sitting here because it's my cuppa time after doing the "seasonal" invoices and UPS bookings for Friday. I would much prefer a normal life... Do you think I could get away with such a book? I think Salman Rushdie would be safer than I... Should I call it "tricks of the trade", with chapters on "the drug culture in parts of the hi-fi press"; "the fan boy culture of corruption in hi-fi sales"; "the outright lies of so-called hi-fi designers"; "the british government's favouritism for made over there hi-fi"; .... I would rather die when God says it's time, not in a mysterious accident! Now that would sell like hot cakes!! Yes, I think you should do it!!!  But you can keep that version to be released the day that you die (hopefully of natural causes, but probably of exhaustion), that will be the real money spinner and you can leave the money behind to whomever you choose.
But in the mean time you can do a technical one, e.g. The truth about op-amps vs. valves, the truth about feedback/wideband/demagnetizers/mm vs. mc/RoHS/linear power supplies etc etc. All your favourite topics and common questions and myths in hi-fi.
We get two free newspapers at the stations here in London (well, actually there are others too), the Metro (am) and London Paper (pm). In the latter there used to be a column called The Square Mile (referring to the City) where an anonymous writer revealed all about the rotting banking culture and much more! It was a hit (not with the bankers) and the writer's identity was revealed eventually... I think he's still alive...?

i like the idea of a tone control, something basic, transparent etc. with a 3 position switch to select frequency and a pot for controlling the amount of cut or boost, having a set of controls for bass and one for treble.
i also go along with tg's suggestion of a dual output psu1, maybe more than two? could this be used to power various diy kits, so as you build more kits and more become available they can be powered off the psu kit?? also a line amp with a few inputs etc. mentioned elsewhere on the forum. |
