first of all i would like to point out i cannot trial any of these cans locally.
denon ah-d5000 or 7000 ath-w1000 or w5000 ultrasone pro900
i know there are plusses and minuses for all. any advice welcome on which would best suit my v-dac/ solo srg amp. my preferences are plenty of detail, great mids and no over-powering bass.
posted this on head-fi, with little response. (i guess most are bored of this kind of thread)
any views guys?
i am leaning toward the denon 7000, at the moment.
my reason for posting is. it appears my ath-ad2000's are becoming a pain for others , late at night.
may have to sell them after i find an alternative
cheers folks

Hi Oldson.
I have the D7000 and can vouch for them but only have the Pro750, HFI780 and ED9 from Ultrasone. I listen to the Denon far more than the others now.
Why not try and get to the Manchester Head-fi meet on the 7th Nov.

unfortunately manchester is a none starter for me.
i am leaning towards the denons, myself.
£700 for headphones is a lot, for me anyway. but i dont want to end up wanting them in a few months time, if i get something else.
just wish there was a dealer offering interest free credit!
cheers

Come on Oldson make it to the meet in Manchester! BTW, have you all tried using Adiogon's site? Usually you get excellent deals on audio gear.

I got mine in the J&R Sale for $549. Keep checking them for a price deal. If you were near me I'd give you a demo of them. They do sing, but I prefer my JH13 custom IEMs now. They are even harder to demo!
Happy hunting.

J&R??
i assume they are US dealer?
did you have to pay import duty?
could do with some US dealer websites to monitor, if you can recommend?
or
forget all that, you stick with your IEMs and sell me the Denons

Audiocubes (US) is where I got my Audio Technica ATH-A900 closed back phones from.
I know others have got phones from PriceJapan as well.
Graham has used the ATH-900s (I think) for testing with the Novo as well as the Sennheiser 250s

Oldson, I am eagerly looking forward to your impressions of the D7000 with the Solo!
When they arrive, drop a post here with your comments: I am really interested in buying this headphone for my birthday next month, and I have no chance of listening to it where I live!

No problem! I trust the opinion of "normal" users more than the one of audio freaks, at times...

Had the denons for a couple of days now, but not had enough time for a decent listen , until now.
the most obvious improvement over my ATH-ad2000s is WARMTH! (absolute buckets of it)
i liked the amount of high to mid detail from the ATs, the denons do not disappoint here either. The denons reveal much more bass (expected for closed cans, of course), and i was worried that the bass would be overpowering, but its not. seems well controlled, not bloated at all.
The guy who sold me the denons, said they had less than 20 hours of use! no reason, whatsoever to doubt this, looking at them. so i guess they will change/improve.
so far , i am delighted with my purchase. so much so, i have already advertised my ATs on head-fi.
personally, with my very limited experience, i would suggest the denons really suit a SS amp.
they are, like my Solo, going knowhere!!
although i am very pleased with my system (pc>v-dac>Solo>d7000) i am itching now to try a more upmarket dac!

Good, a confirmation of what I was already suspecting. My birthday is soon (35 years...), and I guess I'll buy them as a gift to myself!

Hi Lucabeer
Did you go back to your dealer to demo the HD800's with the Solo? What were your final impressions of the HD800 as I remember initially you were dissapointed.

No, not yet... I have had a bad flu (not the swine one), and I have just recovered... But I plan to go there soon, although I still suspect that the Denon would be a better and "more fun" choice for my musical preferences (almost no classical, little jazz, lots of rock/metal/electronica with heavy beats).

Ok, tried the HD-800 with the Solo. Much better! But still, too refined and no "fun" headphone.
I ordered the Denon 7000 on an act of faith (they had a nice discount: 850 EUR)... They should arrive next week for my birthday!
