I'm thinking of experimenting with battery power for the Elevator EXP.

First off, is this a good idea? (issues of noise etc?)

Second, what about variability of volatages - I'm assuming a pair of charged up 12v lead acid batteries will put out maybe 27-28v at peak charge, and perhaps drop to 20v before a periodic charge ... can the EXP take the higher voltage, and will performance suffer unduly at the lower end?

I'm not really fussed about space or cosmetics since quite a bit of my system is a quite heath robinson anyway ....

Sorry forgot third question, normally I leave this on permanently (as Graham recommends), I assume therefore it should continue to be left on ... any issues with this (beyond more frequent recharges ...)

I can't foresee any major problems but recharge at 22V or the internal regulator will "drop-out".

You're probably onto it already, but I think I would be using "deep cycle" type batteries in this sort of application.

That is if you are thinking SLA batteries.
