I'd like some recommendations on reading with respect to amplifier design and function. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and electronics has always been something that I never learned but seemed helpful. I'm open to both technical recommendations and something more colloquially written!

Honestly anything about functional circuits would be interesting too!

Thanks in advance!

There is a wealth of knowledge there.
(and some mistakes/corrections)

This book is used as a reference by many (including Graham!):
https://artofelectronics.net/ - https://artofelectronics.net/
It is a mighty tome, but well worth having. It will help in understanding the basics before getting into the detail.
Graham shares some insight into Phono Preamp design here:

If you search the Forum using parameters Keyword "Design", Member "Graham Slee", "anytime" , "In Topic" it will bring up a wealth of information.

Happy Reading
