As I know so many of you have greater knowledge and experience, I wondered if anyone has (specifically) experience of Ortofon 2M cartridges.
I have a Technics SL-1210 mk2 with an Ortofon 2M blue and I am part way through the early stages of a deep and clearly meaningful love affair with my few-day-old Accession.
With the 1210, am I limited by the integrated cables as to the final output or would upgrading to a bronze or black make a significant improvement?

I have an SL1210 MK2 and think it will work well with an upgraded cartridge. I don't have any of the Ortofon 2M series but they are well reviewed. I did replace the tonearm wiring on my 1210 but I have heard them sound very good with the original Technics cables.

With Ortofon the original Tech captive cables should not be a limiting factor. The original cables were supposed to be fairly low capacitance (e.g. 120-125pf) though there are occasional issues where someone replaced them with something non-standard and https://www.kabusa.com/production_rpt.htm - a particular model year run where Tech used the wrong cables

If you have any doubts you can get a cheap capacitance meter and measure from the headshell socket to the RCA male end and see what is what.

I don't use the 2M carts myself but they are very popular generally, especially the models from the Blue and upward.

As long as your 1210 is in proper working order it should be able to "handle" carts that cost much more than the turntable.

thank you all, you have convinced me that I should take one giant leap for vinyl-kind and I have ordered a 2M black… bit of a jump from the blue, with a ‘Shibata’ (dim-sum?) stylus… since receiving my Accession (Enigma powered) I am blown away as to what I have been missing… I just hope this is another step in the right direction, the path to the bright side of the road, inevitability of finding a unicorn, rocking horse ’stuff’ and that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow… what more could I ask?! If anyone is interested, I will post further information after bedding down with it next week (hopefully).

Congratulations, having found the incredible improvement an Accession can give, I can see a record cleaner on the horizonSmile

The Accession is certainly an ear-opener! You hear more of the music on your records but may notice scratches and dust as Mike has warned.

yes, you are correct about the cleaner… I was looking earlier today… all recommendations accepted. I have just finished watching this item, by Ortofon, about stylus shapes - it is a bit long, feels a little dull in places, but he certainly opened my eyes to a little of the technology behind the various designs.

it has arrived! Having watched Ortofon’s video on setting up the tonearm correctly I bought the alignment thingy - they supply a stylus pressure gauge and micro-bristle brush… and I spent my time getting everything spot on.
I started with an album with high production values I know well and on a heavyweight pressing, AT damp clean and a brush with my new P******t premium brush (got to protect the stylus).
Very quickly realised you were all correct, as always, that there’s stuff you definitely don’t hear on the lesser styli, particularly at lower volume, I was quite surprised to hear nuance and depth that I clearly didn’t hear previously - the Accession obviously made a massive improvement, but (less than one album in) this is another leap.
What a thing!

you are not wrong, part of me is glad I didn’t find this out when I was younger because I’d have spent an absolute fortune by now.
Trust me, the Accession attached to the Enigma, receiving from the 2M black is an absolute revelation, I haven’t stopped playing records all day.
Just poured a g+t to start the evening session…

Carp of the religious variety! I have been missing sooooooo much. JC’s Accession (Enigma powered) and this Ortofon black have distorted my world in a new and magical way - All along the Watchtower is akin to being at Woodstock…
Please All, talk to me about record cleaners and amplifiers, I have gone from Woolworths tower cabinets to live concerts in the last 24h, and I don’t know where I’m going to stop!

Yes it is ear opening. Enjoy the different musicians and the sound of the space they were in. Please pace yourself or you'll have a floor full of LP's!
