Subject: Looking for a new phono stage I have questions

Hi All, I am a new member specifically looking for a new phone stage.

I am interested in the GS Reflex C and likely to try one via the loan service.

I see you need to select 100 or 1000 ohm load impedance and I am unsure which is needed in my case. I will use the reflex with a Hana SL MC cartridge the specs suggest that the 1000 ohm version is correct but it is hard to marry up the specs. Hana specs say load impedance >400 ohms but I do not know if this is the same as the input impedance that GS state. Any suggestions?

My current phono stage is a Naim Stageline but it is starting to get a bit noisy and needs looking at to bring it back to spec. It sounds good through my Naim amp but I am taking this as an opportunity to see if I can do better.

>400 ohms = greater than 400 ohms
1000 ohms is greater than 400 ohms. so that would be your choice.

Thanks, I thought that was the case but does Hana's Load impedance = GS input impedance i.e. are they measuring the same thing?

I read on another topic on this forum that the 100 ohm version is OK for over 90% of MC cartridges and I did not think the Hana was that unusual.

I had a chat with JohnC earlier, and he reckons it'll sound fine with the lower value too.

Adding to the sound advice above I have a Hana SL and use it on 500 ohms. I switched to 100 ohms which also sounded good as Chris and John said.

There is an extensive thread about LOMC loading on another forum  https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/mc-loading-myth.1189997/ - https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/mc-loading-myth.1189997/

The gist of it is that the all the complication that's grown around running MCs is largely needless

Thanks for all the replies.

Another question.

As I said above my curreny phono stage is a Naim Stageline and amplification is also Naim. I power the Stageline from a Naim outboard power supply (Flatcap XS) like the GS Reflex C it runs on 24v.  So I am wondering if it would be possible to power the GS REflex C from the Naim power source with an appropriate power adapter cable?

I am OK with using the supplied power source but it could be worth a try to see what if it does anything for sound quality and it would mean one less plug to find a socket for.

I recommend borrowing the Accession with the PSU1 Enigma so you hear the equipment at its best.

I am sure the Accession especially with the improved power supply is an excellent bit of kit and the ultimate as far as GS is concerned but it would be a waste of time for me to borrow one as it is pretty much twice the price I am willing to pay.

It may seem like I spend a lot on my HiFi and to some I probably do but you should know the Naim Amps etc. I have are all items I have bought used and often refurbished. So a fraction of new prices.

I am really after something of a similar price to a Naim Stageline so the Reflex C is what I am looking at.

I was just thinking I would in replacing the Stageline have a spare slot to power another phono stage like the Reflex that runs on a 24v supply.

Do you think this is possible?

I am going to tomorrow. I pm'd him earlier today about organising a Reflex C on loan.

I spoke to John C this morning and very edifying it was too.  I am borrowing a reflex C and it should come next week.  I am looking foreward to trying it out and comparing it to my Naim Stageline Phono.

I did ask him for about using a spare output from my Naim Flatcap XS power supply to power the Reflx and it is entirely possible to do so and he could make me up a lead to do it.  I will leave that to try on my own unit if/when I get one after returning the Loan unit. Whether it will be better or not is a matter of trying and listening.

I have had the Reflex C plugged in since Last Saturday and it is seemingly getting into its stride now. I am hoping that it will be even better by the weekend when I will have some more time to sit and listen

I am enjoying listening to it and I have set things up so I can do some side to side comparisons to my current N**m Stageline unit.

Initial impressions are good. It has a lot of control, clarity and great sound stage.  The Stageline is not completly overshadowed as it is still a very good phono stage but the GS Reflex has it bettered.

I elected to take a std 100ohm load unit but I suspect things would be a bit better with a higher loading up to the same as the Stageline which is 470ohm paired with my cartridge.  John C said when I spoke to him that I could have whatever loading I needed rather than just the 100ohm.1Kohm choices. When I return the unit and make up my mind on ordering I will speak to John C and see what he advises.

So far it's impressive but I need to do some more listening to really see what it can do.

Thank you for this. I use 500 ohms loading, close to the 470 ohms you mentioned.

I think 500ohm would be fine too it is just that the N**m Stageline has a fixed 470ohm load and that worked well to my ears with the Hana cartridge.

I spoke to John C on the phone this PM. Firstly, one has to say what a treat to be able to speak to the manufacturer/designer about their products.  John is of course very knowledgable and patient with his customers questions.  I very much like the idea of supporting a small UK company and of course it makes a big difference that they have such a good product!

Anyhow, I have ordered a Reflex C with a 470ohm loading and he is also going to make me a cable to be able to try out using my N**m Flatcap XS power supply to power the Reflex. I am open minded as to what difference this might make. The Flatcap is a high quality power supply but it may not suit the Reflex and of course the Supplied GS PSU1 is matched to the unit so may win out. I would just like to try it.

Glad you were able to get a new phono stage that met your requirements. Enjoy the new gear.

Thanks, I have not got the new one as yet but I am still listening to the Reflex C loan unit and I think after 10 days switched on I think it is still improving.

I am patiently ( well I am trying to be) waiting and it will be an excited wait to get the new one plugged in and burning-in to get the best out of it.

It will be worth the wait I am sure.

Is it? The older Flatcaps (if memory serves) were a toroid, a cheapo encapsulated bridge rectifier and an LM317T (circuit straight off the data sheet) shoved up the corner of an expensive box. What it does do it take the preamp out of the power amp power supply equation which makes a difference but it’s hardly the last word in circuit design. Least ways the old one wasn’t.
