Some time ago I used to have a DAB radio as part of my HiFi at home and I was just thinking how many people still have one. I still listen to DAB but mainly on a small bed side radio and mostly to BBC Five Live, never for music. I don't know where you can still get a separates DAB radio for your HiFi? I did once consider internet radio but never got round to it (mainly because it involves a computer) I started this topic as I was listening to 5Live and was thinking if it would sound any better through my HiFi. I have read that people are listening less to the radio and I will admit that the only time I listen to music on the radio is in the car (not DAB) It seems that the popularity of radio for music is on the decline, I'm wondering if this as anything to do with Streaming. I do remember when I first got DAB radio I thought this is great I don't have to fine tune it to a station. I can also remember people saying that DAB would be the end of FM, AM and Long Wave but it seems this is a long way off (I'm talking here about the general public)

I am not a radio user except for Radio 3 in the car where I have only the very basic audio which comes as standard. Even so, I tried using DAB once as an experiment but switched immediately back to FM. Rubbish even on basic audio gear.
By co-incidence I was recently watching an opinion-piece youtube-vid which touched on this topic.
The gist of it was that DAB has not fulfilled its potential in the UK from a high-quality listening perspective, because a) we're on an old system which has limited effectiveness in the compression it uses and b) the increased bandwidth has been used to squeeze many more stations in at low bitrates, rather than have fewer stations at high bitrates. Examples were shown of independent commercial stations at 32kbps mono, and even the national broadcaster was using only 128kbps stereo.
"Techmoan" is the channel name if you're interested.

Techmoan now you come to mention it I think I may have seen that bit about DAB on there. I have seen a few of his videos they a good. Others are using DAB+ so why can't the UK, every DAB radio here comes with it but here in the UK we CAN'T use it. I think I know why "MONEY"

I wonder if the expansion of streaming with the use of smart phones and tablets as the receivers killed off DAB?

Jon That is what I was thinking "streaming" Here in the UK we invent something and others improve on it and THEN make the most of it. but we are happy with what we Invented, get, and don't wont to invest to improve. We have the talent here but it seems that it takes other countries companies to come here with the money to invest and then go away and take all the credit. In motor sport a lot of car makers make the car and then sent it to the UK for us to improve on the handling (chassis work) the Japanese did this a lot in rallying. There is one motor sport in America where they did the same even Ferrari at one point did it for their F1 cars I don't think they sill do. How many inventers take their inventions and then have to go some where else to get the investment, there has been a lot. Going back to DAB do you also think that people are not too concerned with sound quality now a days their happy just to listen to music.

Despite the BBC's 'hard sell' commercials regarding 'digital broadcasting' (which seem to have disappeared), why would anybody want to listen via a UK based DAB system, given, as I understand it, that DAB+ will not be introduced into the UK, and a large consensus that FM is superior to both. I have several FM tuners (7) including a L*nn Kremlin and a Meridian 504, however, I now listen mostly to 'internet' radio via a Cambridge CXN V2, a Magnum Dynalab 801, or a Revo Super Connect, for the simple reason that I can listen to 'jazz' 'world wide' and 24/7, rather than the few stations available here on DAB, or one or two programmes 'per week' via the BBC on FM.

I still listen to DAB but not for music. I can't understand why the UK as not got DAB+, It is supposed to be better, Didn't the UK invent DAB? I do have a mate that has a very good FM set up (with outdoors aerial) and it does sound better than DAB and he also has internet radio but he is trying to get that sorted, but even that sounds better as it is. Does anyone know if you can get internet radio built into a car?

As posted earlier in this thread I used to listen to FM years ago but never went for DAB as I stream music instead. Good point about our missing out on DAB+, what are its benefits please?

I would like to know that too. I have heard it sounds better that's all. I think I'm right in saying they have delayed the FM switch off, Not sure why.
