Came across this device in an exhibition of the company history of Pye in Cambridge. It's a magnetic disc audio recorder / playback machine from 1950s. Looking at the arm, it has a 'cartridge' which appears to track a machined groove on the disc with a two pronged 'stylus' (a bit like a miniature fuse). Evidently it still works but the sound was said to be pretty terrible.
Pye had their own record label at the time and were looking at alternative technology but like many innovations this one never caught on...well not until digital storage used blank magnetic discs and a tracking head!

Never seen anything like this before so thought I'd share.

I like looking at old music play back formats
I once did consider DAT tape, it was a vary good format but expensive. I did get into Minidisc for a few years. there are so many different formats out there I could go on and on. Some good and bad, remember 8 track. I'll stop now or I will be up all night.
Thanks for this post

not old but SACD never took off. Well I have never seen any for sale not with the type of music I like. DVD Audio was a another one, the two were better than CD for sound quality. Reel-to-reel, I can remember my Grandad having this when I was a little boy. You can still get them and the tapes, Pre recorded tapes go for anything from £70 up. they do say the sound quality is excellent.

Classic old gear Mike and good examples Jon. What about mini-cd's? Strictly a software format but even so.

I'm now thinking about radiogram cabinets and music centres.

My Grandad also had a Radiogram cabinet, I would have liked to have had it for myself, but didn't have the space. My dad had a music centre, on the cassette it had GECs noise reduction system which was said to be better than Dolby at the time. Mini-cd  - didn't that have a problem because it didn't conform to the Red Book standard? If I can remember rightly Sony were not happy. Talk about cassette Philips came out with the N2401 and it had a ski-slope attachment this enabled it play up to 6 tapes and play both sides and I think you could also programme it to play what tracks you liked. I would like to put a link to Pics or video but I don't know how to do this

Yes mini-CD was one f those curio items that could have been adapted for singles or EP's. I found quite a few radiograms in the local tip in the 1970's and 1980's, salvaging the old autochangers, amplifiers, and so forth. I turned a few valve radios in guitar amps too, bakelite blues! We had a lot of Philips gear because my father worked there but never the N2401, which seems astonishing. Philips also had a single ended noise reduction system called DNL for tape playback which reduced high frequencies in the quieter bits if I remember correctly.

Photos can be loaded into a post by clicking on the arrow. It takes a couple of stages and and there is a size limit but it works reliably. No sure about video, that might need external hosting... others may know more about this.

I used to enjoy reel to reel recordings, the equivalent to today's ripping. I had a Sony TC377 ( famously used in James Bond film, Dr. NO ). This was matched up with a Leek Stereo 20, Whardale Super Lintons and an A&R deck. Thought it sounded great in  '70's until I heard a pair of massive Tannoy corner speakers in shop in Sheffield. Such a big sound!
Don't know anyone who could house a pair of Tannoys like that but there must be some mansions owners, we can't all live in boxes.

There is a lot of old tech out there that could have changed the way we listen to music for the better but it seems since digital came along and after CD that quality of music play back as taken a back step, I'm talking mp3 here. We are only just getting back to CD sound quality (streaming, downloads) People want convenience now over sound quality it seems. One old tech VINYL still lives on, makes you think, don't it. Not all old tech is bad.

My 2nd Cousin's Dad had one of those Disc Recorders.
If I remember it correctly it was as if magnetic tape had been 'spread' over a record, very strange! I can remember recording our voices on it and I didn't think it was as clear as the Reel to Reel tape recorder my Dad had. And I do remember thinking, why?
However it was a long time ago, probably ~60 years! (yes I am that old!)

It also reminds me that I haven't used my Sony Reel to Reel for a while, must see if it still works!

Yes the quality was low which was probably due to the compression needed to get enough minutes of music on there. Well below the standard set by reel to reel

Mike,
It was the TC366 that was in Bond - I think it was in Live and Let Die. I had one myself. Bought for a fiver from a jumble sale in my local village hall when I was 13. Sold it to my mate’s dad for a tenner. Doubled my money!

Thanks for the correction Tim, I was going by memory which isn't always a good thing these days.  I wouldn't mind finding one at a jumble sale myself, just to play around with. Mind you the quality of digital ripping is so good that I doubt it would get much use.

I think my Grandads Reel to reel was a Sony. He did like the brand, He had a TV and portably radio  all made by them. there is two HiFi separates you don't hear of now a days, The tuner and receiver, do they still make them? My 1st proper HiFi tuner was DAB and FM It was the 1st thing I ever bought on the Internet, My mum was working at a school and they had it and she got the headmaster to order it for me, I can remember the shop in town was selling it for £250, My mate found it for £180 online. WHAT A SAVING. I didn't have access to the internet back then. Digital compact cassette, remember them?

Looked out my Sony Reel2Reel, it is a TC366 !
Inherited it from my Uncle who worked at the Beeb. He was in the Engineering dept' at BBC Centre (White City) repairing their Ampex Video recorders, amongst other things. They were the size of a small room and used vacuum heads to keep the tape in contact, if my memory is correct Smile

The spools were around five or six inches diameter. I'm pretty sure they were less than the seven inch spools the (audio) Tandberg's used. The tape was half inch and black unlike the brown of the emitape. It was the "portable" version of the LDL1000, so it could be carried to different rooms, intended for the education market (where I started in AV). It was black and white only (or perhaps we must call it monochrome these days). It was also quite heavy!

The three "fiddle knobs" were needed to "adjust" the tracking, and I remember standing there like a different type of knob, trying to get the damn thing stable enough to leave with a teacher and class of kids. Tape wear was a problem as each reel was re-recorded every week, and played about ten times.

If you think that was fun, the LEA replaced it with the dreaded VCR. But at least that gave me a change of scenery - taking it to Leeds every two weeks to have it fixed!
