Read about this on the hifiaf.com blog. It’s definitely worth having a read of his (the Canadian Hi-Fi blogger) website as he goes into detail about it from a user’s rather than a designer’s point of view.

Interesting isn't it? Distinctive design too. How soon will it be available for other mounting distances I wonder.

Indeed, very interesting.

A post on LH last month led to a weekend of forum mining.  Diyaudio,Pinkfish,Audioflat. It appears to be an excellent eample of lateral thinking, quickly acknowledged by a number of notable Audio engineering proffesionals. A couple of people on LH have now built simple Diy copies (Richard Supatrac is very supportive of Diy experimentation) and the consensus confirm the claims. I would sum up by saying those initial Diy efforts are very surprised and impressed by the performace of their homemade arms implementing this radical bearing design. An international Patent has been applied for.

This is something extra-ordinary, Having contacted Richard, SUPATRAC and after a couple of emails and a couple of freindly, easy and reassuring telephone calls (Geniune nice bloke) I placed an order for a 12" Blackbird. This for my ongoing Lenco project.

Richard will build any length up to 13" so simply advise Pivot to Spindle and mounting preferences SME/R***/L***

I have no doubt that this innovative product has it's 'risks' unheard, but it makes good sense to me especially the working mechanics.  Reassured by Richard's design philosophy of longevity and ease of implementing any improvements retrospectively, together with the simplicity of the design, I consider that any risk is negligible.

It will be fascinating to see over the next few years how this  innovative and simple horizontal bearing impacts on the way we view a traditional Unipivot. The next big thing? Who knows, it's a very smart design and it will be fascinating to see how the Big reviewers respond. I suggested to Richard that a review example sent to TNTAudio would be a good place to get a reliable and honest review if I were in his shoes..... (I don't envy him the Hi-Fi Big-Fish Shark-Fest. )

if I hadn’t recently taken delivery of an Audiomods Series 6 (still in its box) for my PTP6 Lenco I would have been tempted.

There's a number of reasons why I pulled the trigger on this arm.

Firstly having read all I could the logic and physics just make lots of sense. I have no experience of unipivots, but am well aware of their standing, the compromises just don't appeal to me . This arm addresses my concerns over groove interface (bias and azimuth). The low pivot design and the horizontal force seem obvious now. It has been said by others that it is now so obvious why has nobody done it before?

For a number of years I have been looking for a Terminator T3pro but none of the S/H offerings over the past couple of years have been either in good enough condition or simply too expensive for my stomach.

I have been watching the new Terminator from Russia but Brexit has stuffed the Euro exchange rate and the cost of a new one was a potential blow due to VAT and Duty. My hessitation a few years ago when a Euro was worth about 76p has completely stuffed my chances of getting anything under£1300 or more. It's just a bit too much to be prepared to pay for unknown, unexpected HMRC charges. Something for the future when the possibility of a £300 charge isn't going to make me feel sick.

I was considering a Jelco 750 as an alternative to the T3 because I would like a 12" gimbal arm, or in addition in the future to a T3 but again compromised for myself by the removeable headshell, again, a sonic compromise that I'm uncomfortable with because I don't want to be swapping cartridges around. Then Jelco hit the wall.

The opportunity to get an innovative arm, fixed headshell at 12" for the introductory offer price made a lot of sense when the above has been churning in my thoughts for some years now.  No doubt that the price was the major factor following the physics, the design aesthetics much less so. Although I think that the looks are quite smart I would never base my choice on this, the Terminator is certainly not a good looking contraption by any stretch of the imagination.

I really like the logic of the string lift........  Wink

That’s been one of the highlights of the discussion around the development of the SUPATRAC arm. The string finger lift. A marmite feature. Me? I love marmite.

Perhaps it should be GOLD coloured string? Wink

Might make all the difference to those challenged by the aesthetic of lowtech logic......

Worth noting that it was developed in response to the dynamics of the suspended sub-chassis type turntable, where a steady hand is required when cueing.
