Thre records are very well made, remasterd for vinyl from the original analog tapes.

Agreed. Probably have about 90% of these. The ones I dont have Im not too fussed about owing.Very good value

However, the 80 and Classic reissues offer even greater value :-)

I agree that the Tone Poet records are superb and great value.  If you are interested in jazz outside of blue note there are also another two series of reissues that are excellent and reasonably priced ( at least in the USA)

The Acoustic Sounds series:

and from Craft Recordings:

I have a bunch of the Tone Poet and BN80 series. Most of them are excellent.

There are a few titles that suffer from severe tape flutter issues but this problem seems to have been solved, or maybe they are just choosing titles to do that have less tape problems since the issue was raised. I won't go into more detail here, but you can find some discussion on that if you search around.

RE: the new Verve Acoustic Sounds series, I only have one of those, which is A Love Supreme. I do plan to try more down the line.

RE: Craft, I'm afraid some of those Chet titles suffer from the tape flutter issue as well. I passed on that boxset and individual reissues as a result.

Lots of good jazz reissues out there. The French label Sam Records does some great stuff, as well as the UK label Pure Pleasure. Also, Speakers Corner is another good one to look for.

I concur with the Sam Records and Pure Pleasure suggestion since I have a few of those but I admit that I have not yet heard anything from Craft.  I have two Chet titles on preorder so I guess I will reserve judgement until I get those.

Oh whats the Verve Live Supreme pressing like? Might take a look at that one

I have the Gil Evans and Ray Charles Verve on pre order, so looking forward to these 2 :-)

I will have a dig into Sam so thanks for the recommendation

Agree its a good time for Jazz Reissues. The Impex Patricia Barber One Step is very good if thats your thing and so is the Legrand Jazz 45rpm also on Impex. Then theres the MOFI One Step but im sure theres another thread for these lol

Missed out on the John Coltrane Craft One Step release. Will need to keep my eyes peeled for the next bunch

Back to Blue Note, im currently playing Bobbi Humphrey - Blacks & Blues (Jazz Funk) Blue Note 80 as I type :-)

The Verve Acoustic Sounds version of Love Supreme sounds great. Cut by Ryan K. Smith.

RE: Impex, I have a few. My copy of Legrand Jazz is the Impex 33 and it sounds incredible. Try "Greensleeves" by Shoji Yokouchi Trio Plus Yuri Tashiro if you like Jazz guitar albums. One of the best sounding records I owned.

That Bobbi Humphrey reissue is great as well.

RE: Hubbard's Straight Life, I need a copy of that too. Was holding out for an old CTI pressing but getting one in top condition for a good price is difficult now. Both Org and PP did that as a reissue, no idea which is better but I will probably choose one down the line...

Some great titles on that list, and hopefully not too many problems with the master tapes.

Glad to see Gerald Wilson on there. I'm hoping that title does well because I've badgered BN a couple times about reissuing his Golden Sword LP, which is an incredible and very underrated album. I have an old mono copy of that one, but a new Tone Poet edition in stereo would be even better.

Hi, are finding the one-step pressings a big step up on regular pressings? They’re a big investment!
Cheers, Philip.

I refuse to buy them for the most part. I have yet to see a title where I'd be willing to lay down the money. I think they're a cash cow for the labels that do them. If you remember about ten years ago MOFI used to do a much more diverse array of stuff and now they are mostly in the bore-zone with stuff like Eagles one-steps.

No offense to any fans of the Eagles but I've heard their music so much over the decades that I have little interest in buying anything by them and listening to it on my own time. Just not my cup of tea.

Facts are that folks are much more likely to notice differences in these pressings vs. others based on the mastering engineers' EQ choices, which can vary greatly on a MOFI release compared to a non-MOFI release.

"Special" vinyl formulas for low-noise have been around since the 80s and back then the labels often didn't charge extra for it. If you have any records made with Quiex or KC9000 you know what I'm talking about.

A special vinyl formula and changes to the plating process are only going to make so much difference. EQ differences, different source tapes, etc. can make MUCH larger differences. One mastering guy I know of thinks one steps are a scam. Same deal with the Electric Recording Co. releases and other things of that ilk.

Today's arrival, one of the latest Tone Poet reissues. This one's by Sonny Red and I'd never heard any of his band leader releases before but really enjoyed this one. Definitely a must have if you like this kind of 60s hard bop.
