Well, me being well on my way to being blind as a bat (good hearing though!) I use my walking around specks and my reading glasses together, and that's sufficient to run the solder down each side of a SSOP. But to inspect the quality of the soldering I then add a x7 or x9 (depending on what I can find on the bench) "big eye" (eye glass). Obviously I can't do production.

Thanks Graham,tried your trick but as all my specs(specks is wrong according to wife n daughter)are bifocal or varifocal it didn't work!
Seeing the optician tomorrow.
