The intrepid John C is in Munich again with HiFi System Components dealer MachOne.

A very interesting way of displaying a headphone based system!

Very interesting Graham.

Was there a lot of interest following that show?

Actually there never is and never was, and hoping that by doing the same thing over and over that the result will be different is madness, so I told John C that he can go and visit his Bavarian friends next year if he wishes, but I will not be making a contribution.

That is such a shame Graham! From when I first discovered GSP, I have always wanted all the success in the world to come your way. Your creations are my personal benchmark so I don't look elsewhere unless I truly have to (fancy making a portable digital audio player Wink) or I want to shame other systems.

Sadly as is the way in every industry the big boys with their huge profit margins get to dictate the way while blurring the lines of true quality, to the point that customers nowadays wouldn't be able to tell what real HiFi was if they heard it anyway. The fact that I stumbled across a (new) "retro" cassette walkman the other day says it all; they have made everything into a fad that they control and the mindless lemmings keep chasing. Angry

Hi Graham,

Apart from the fact that the "Big Players" in the market dictating the terms, One of the worst habits with the Audio aficionados is that, They want huge heavy metal components, which they assume equals good quality.

If ever you want to go back to another event, Please try the revealing stunt, friends at Bose do.They make you sit in front of Huge Speakers,  Play a Demo Track, Then reveal the small cubes inside the box.
Probably order some empty Aluminium Shells from China, and mount the proprius in to those, and then Drive some good size speakers. Later after a bit of presentation on the Product, open the top cover to reveal the actual unit.

As always, how much real business these shown bring-in..... Its a big question.

Here in Singapore, I have always noticed that the Chinese manufacturers on the last day, just sell their display units at ridiculous prices, as they say its not worth shipping back and forth. Which is a smart way too.

Cheers,
Vinod Vincent

I think I have the same hifi rack as the one in John's photos and more importantly I also have some of the GSP/HFC gear which is brilliant as Tim has essentially said above. Vinod Vincent's point is well made too.

Hi Jon, Aint that Rack too tall for the GSP Components? Was it something specifically purchased for GSP units or your Different Components?
Got to Agree at that height, the Turntable is at a nice high position, Making it easier to swap records each time.

Good point Vinod. I've got 5 GSP/HFC units on one shelf with the Accession and Solo stacked up. The heavy stuff like my AV amp and UHD/BD player is down on the lower shelves and my turntables at the top. This means the main one is at an ideal height for me just as the show deck in the photo above is.

I think I have posted some shots before, mainly of the Gorbe turntable. I will take some rack shots and upload them when I have a chance to.

Thanks Jon, Thats a cool set-up you have there. Dedicated GSP shelf. Awesome.
Is there a need to use any footers for GSP Units?
I used 3 Cerabase footers (For Elevation) as I was placing my Majestic DAC on top of the Streamer. Then due to the cables, The DAC was not stable in position, so I have placed a Door Stopper as Ballast to keep the DAC in position. These I have done to avoid any heat from my Streamer to DAC and also to hold the unit in place. However it is easier to clean also Smile

Thanks Vinod. No need for extra footers with GSP gear on a stable shelf. I can see an unstable or wobbly stack of gear may need some help.

Hi Vinod,
I’ve done a lot of experimentation with different bits of isolation equipment under my Majestic and Reflex/EXP combo. When they were sitting in a glass shelf, everything I tried improved the sound in terms of resolution and dynamics. Some more than others. Also resulted in small changes to colour and tone. Not always good.
Moving them onto heavy bamboo made a big difference. Now all of the footers make negligible difference. Glass shelves are now gone.
Mick.

Hi Jon, With the Weight on Top the Majestic (As in pic), the unit is stable. However I do not have the space to keep the DAC directly on the Hifi rack, so this is my best option at the moment Smile

Thanks Mick. I have always liked the solidity offered by the Wooden Hifi furniture. Also I assume Glass as a Turntable Platter is also a bit tricky. I have seen one of the famous one's offer the Glass Platter.

That's what I'd have done too.

I am pleased with my bamboo rack and like its appearance.

Interesting reading the above posts; I've never found any problems with glass shelves. My 'Stands Unique' rack (company now defunct, I think) is a wood and glass affair with fairly substantial (10mm) glass shelves. Maybe weight is a factor? I must admit, I do use granite with spikes in conjunction with the glass for some components and the whole thing is seriously heavy.

Hi Peter,
Based on my understanding Glass has very Good Structural Rigidity based on the Thickness. But one undesirable property of the Glass is the ringing effect (How the sound Vibrations are transferred). I was recently watching a Youtube video on a speaker that uses a Glass for its Cabinet. But they are using "Sandwiched / Laminated" panel.

I think you are right Vinod, internal damping is the key in glass shelves. Also a stable rack would limit the spread of ringing vibrations, if indeed the shelves acted this way. Most of the glass shelves I saw were laminated as you suggest.

My experience of wooden shelves in a well designed rack has been better than various glass ones and less likely to show patterns in dust!

Yes Jon, All those Glass & Glossy finishes are "Finger Print Magnets". Tongue
I have always liked my Audio Furniture in Wood. Infact my first one was a Sewing Machine Stand which I replaced the Top with a plank of Wood to place my components.

I had glass shelfs and hell the dust, I got fed up with cleaning them other than that I had no problem with using it sound wise. I now have bamboo and it HAS improve the sound quality. I also replaced my speaker stands from metal to wood and that did the same. (plus they look a lot better)
