Warning you may disagree with the musical opinions expressed..
....... but you would be sadly misguided Wink

Its that time of year again, a much needed cash injection for independent record stores.

However while pouring over this years release list I am left wonder how much the idea has been tainted by commercialism, both by the record companies and the buyers.

A number of times now I have been standing patiently in line at Piccadilly records in Manchester waiting to buy that release I wanted and then the store to announce  that is sold out, yet I have already seen some scumbag is selling a copy on Ebay in the Manchester Area at an inflated price. Of course this is not a criticism of Piccadilly records (or any store) who have a policy of not selling more than one copy of a record to a person. Yet even if they know who is doing it,  it is difficult to stop them, at the end of the day it is still as sale to them. (N.B scumbags live everywhere not just Manchester where I live)

Will just add that I am not dissing Piccadilly Records here who do try their best to combat the scumbags and put on a great days worth of events on RSD.

See the below link for Paul Wellers decision to pull out of record store day and the response.

https://www.nme.com/news/music/paul-weller-30-1229600

While I am on the side of record shops here , I have come across a story of a record shop that has been struck off the the RSD list for selling Paul Weller records online just before the start of RSD, not substantiated yet.

Then we have the naked commercialism of the record companies. What started out as an opportunity to find some rare gems not previously released has turned into what seems like a way of making some money out of some dusty old crap  that nobody dared release at the time, dodgy live recordings or the latest thing I have noticed soundtracks to less than spectacular films.

Now I know that film sound tracks can be items of merit such  Get Carter (actually on RSD release this year!!) , Zulu , any John Barrie or Morricone sound track or interesting compilations such as Baby Driver ( the film is edited to the sound track) , Guardians of the Galaxy or Pulp Fiction.

However this year we have the Soundtrack to Coneheads, a less than stellar film , a mediocre track list full of unconvincing covers (ignore Tainted love for sake of argument) , this ain't no Blues Brothers. We also have Mad Max 2 soundtrack, I know its by Brian May , but really, this thing has not dated well. The Faculty, I know this is a Robert Rodriguez film and I have referenced some compilation soundtracks above but this another example of a forgettable track list. Howard Stern's Private Parts ... just WTF?

Live stuff... maybe I am too young and not spaced out when I listened but I have heard nothing from Woodstock sonically of merit except for Sly and the Family Stone ( RSD release this year) yet releases are still pushed out. The Rolling Stones live in 2017, I don't listen to any of their albums after about 1979, never mind listening to them mangling anything I may like 40 years later.

Then there is the section I refer to as WTF? or WTF? (who or what).
This year we Europe (an argument for Brexit) , DEF leopard (yawn)  Brigitte Bardot seeming advertised solely on the gate fold picture and a whole bunch of stuff I have never heard of who I could not be bothered to google about. However this all pales insignificance  to the blatant cashing in of the the Justin Beiber releases in 2016 Censored.... really Censored, which soulless executive mind control 'genius' came up with that.

But... I have an addiction and I publicly acknowledge it, I have already chosen what I will be attempting to buy, the never before on vinyl releases, the out of prints, the I've never hear of them before (Wink) and the interesting sub genre Various artists compilations that get released. I will , holiday permitting, be queuing up praying the touts don't get there first and then revisiting in the following days to hoover up any missed delights.

I've been a keen supporter of RSD almost since the beginning but I must say it has lost a lot of the original appeal, partly due to reasons Steve mentions above.

As it's become more popular, the need to arrive earlier each year to stand a chance of getting the titles I want has become increasingly tedious. Only 3 years ago I could arrive by 1am to be within the first two or three people in the queue. Last time it was midnight and I was 17th, my friend at 8pm Friday was still only third!

It also happens that some of the titles I have queued for have either been reissued later on or sold online close to the original price & as I buy only to listen, rarity or resale value has no appeal.

The few titles I am interested in this year do not justify spending Friday afternoon or early evening to almost guarantee purchase so for me sadly RSD has reached the end of the road. I still support brick and mortar record stores whenever possible though.

I agree with you guys. I don’t care to queue for anything and I’m not going to stand in line on RSD with the hope that I can snag the one copy the store has. Or even better, they don’t have a copy at all.

Our local record store offers the remaining RSD releases for sale on the Monday after RSD online or in store. I’m always able to pick up a couple of titles.

Long lines and crowded stores are not for me. The only time I ever stood in line was a few years ago when I happened to be in a smaller town for RSD. People only lined up 15 minutes before the shop opened and there were probably less than 10 people in line. I got all the releases I wanted that day.

Since then I just pick up RSD releases (if there is anything I want) well after RSD, often weeks or months later, sometimes a year later or more. A couple stores in my area often wind up with way too much RSD stock after RSD is over, which they then mark down.

The other thing is I don't "need" everything "on vinyl". If the album is available on CD or lossless digital, I'm fine with missing out on an artificially limited LP. Many of these RSD releases aren't great quality anyway.

I've been disappointed by some of the RSD releases, as well as some of the vinyl reissues I've purchased. I also still buy CDs, but I find myself leaning more towards SACDs, if available.

Although, I have downloaded many lossless digital files, I have yet to branch out into integrating any kind of DAC or music player into my system. I guess that is a discussion for another forum, as I don't know where to begin.

I have followed RSD for the first 2/3 years after returning to vinyl. Then I lost interest: I prefer normal editions of a good quality that are made available everywhere, and without scalping.

Handy hint for those near MCR, before queuing up for hours at Piccadilly records try Eastern Bloc and Vinyl Exchange as they had very much smaller queues (if at all), I missed out on the Yazoo release not trying Vinyl Exchange before the guys in front of me in the PR Queue sent a scout there.

Did my hoovering up at Revo records in Halifax.

OH goody record store day is on 23/04/22. What rubbish or new old rereleases have we got to look forward this year. I haven't bothered in the past to go to a record shop on RSD and I won't be going this year.
Has anyone here ever been and have you ever picked up something worthwhile, your time and effort in going Or have you got home and thought why did I spend my money on that rubbish.

Record shops are great but need us all year. It seems I'm not the only cynic about RSD.

Years ago I was going go but I was on nightshift and by the time I woke up it was late in the afternoon but when I saw what the local record shops had for sale I was glad I didn't because I would have probably spent good money on crap

I didn't mean it like that. They get sent this stuff so they HAVE to try an sell it, My favourite shop puts something on like a local artist to play in the shop, it gets people in and then maybe spend their money, I have no problem with that that is what there in business for. A lot of record shops don't bother with it now a days and you can see why.

The first 3 or 4 (2008-2011) were great here in Brighton - lots of stuff you'd never have hoped to see on vinyl, and a real buzz around the early-morning queueing (mostly at Rounder Records - RIP - before dipping into Borderline - RIP - and Resident to hoover up other goodies). To be fair to the excellent Resident, they still make a real fist of turning it into an event (instore performances, street busking, raffles etc.) - but the lists over the last few years have been mostly predictable/lame/overpriced. In short, I Agree With Luca:

The last few RSDs (even pre-plague), I've usually popped in to Resident and/or Union Music in Lewes the following week and picked up the few titles I fancied anyway. In any case, widespread availability of pre-digital LPs via Discogs has made a mockery of much of the RSD "limited reissue" mindset...

Here's a recent article from the shops' perspective:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/feb/17/record-store-day-independent-music-shops-vinyl-shortage - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/feb/17/record-store-day-independent-music-shops-vinyl-shortage

I would agree with the sentiments mostly after speaking to my local shops.

One of the problems in my area is that even the smaller stores must order a huge amount of RSD stock, with no idea what they'll get. Then "leftover" titles often sit around for months or even over a year and sell very slowly or have to be marked down. They cannot return any of this stuff to distros and unless the shop is a very busy, high revenue one, many feel pressured to put RSD stuff on credit.

The other thing about RSD is that over time, it has been co-opted more and more by majors pushing gimmick releases. Often it's something that doesn't need to be reissued or throwaway gimmick crap like die-cut records and picture discs. The specialty stuff people like me would actually be interested gets bumped to low priority by the pressing plants and the quantities are even more limited than they would be ordinarily.

Then you have the cumulative effects of RSD happening multiple times a year now, and majors taking up plant capacity from indie labels and specialty labels for non-RSD releases. Indie record stores DO NOT stay in business from selling top 40 stuff, for the most part. They might sell some of it, but rely on independent music, back catalog titles, specialized genres, used vinyl, etc.

There is no point in them stocking things like Taylor Swift because people can buy that at big box chains and Amazon. Yet that crap is what is sucking up capacity at the pressing plants.

I've said this before but I really think vinyl has reached the saturation point in the mainstream or close to it. It's like baseball cards or beanie babies for anyone the remembers when that stuff crashed hard. Or the comic book bubble in the 90s. Sooner or later things are going to pop.

Had a look at the list for RSD 2022. WTF!!?
The Proclaimers - Sunshine On Leith £54.99
Absolute madness. I’ve seen two copies of this in the second hand shops on my travels this week alone.

Rick Astley - Whenever You Need Somebody
WT(actual)F? A monumental waste of plastic, card, paper, time and Abbey Road electricity. Yes, it’s been remastered at Abbey Road. You’d think they’d have better things to do.

This all backs up the “perceived” major label hijacking of this event.

I think the Rick album was a dollar bin record here a few years ago, then he had a bit of a career comeback due to the whole "rickrolling" meme or whatever. I'm not trying to bash the guy's music or anything even though it's not what I'd typically listen to. That album sold A LOT of copies, even over here. No need for a reissue except to cash in. I wonder how many people buy that because they like it vs. being in on some kind of ironic joke?

The Proclaimers album I have seen far more often on CD over here. It's very common in used bins, or at least used to be. The price on that thing is ridiculous. Converted to USD that's around $74 which is more expensive than a 45rpm double LP from Analogue Productions.

I was kinda interested in the Art Pepper release, and more so with regards to the Blur Bustin’ and Dronin’, but missed out at my local store. I’ve just double checked and the flipper prices on the Blur release aren’t obscene… But, still, there is the principle of the thing.

In the last couple of years the amount of dross shoved out for RSD I finally reached the point where I replied 'meh' when my wife pointed out it was RSD at the weekend.

I might browse the leftover buckets at Revo Records in HFX when I am next there or or the few in MCR.

I know some people go just to see if there is anything worth having, Me I don't see the point as it was being advertised anyway. Like it was said on this post, the music industry gears up for one day with stuff you don't wont or wouldn't normally buy and all this means is the artists that has something worth buying can't get it released because the pressing plants are over worked for one day in the year. I would like to know how much of what's for sale on RSD actually gets sold?

And when I say "gets sold" I mean at full price because I know a lot of RSD stuff is discounted afterwards because the shops were forced to have it and now can't sell it.
One of the record shops I go to had stuff for sale after RSD discounted several mouths after the day and I'm talking nigh on a year.

Picked up Bill Evans Inner Spirit.  Very good sound quality for a live recording although not much stereo separation.  Actually sounds cool with mono switched on my accession.
Really enjoyable music recorded in 1979 near the end of his life.
