Hi There,

Have been using a P******t RPM 5 for about 3 years now with an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge but have been toying with the idea of upgrading. Not sure on the sonic benefits of such a move or  what I would need to spend to make any improvements if any. Perhaps members here can give some advice as to what I should be looking for or not?. Nothing wrong with the P******t but you know sometimes it's like a TV or car you just feel like a change!Wink.

Any idea of the budget for this, Terry? And you want to keep to MM as you have an Accession?

Belt/idler/direct drive? Maybe secondhand?

Keeping in line with the somewhat minimalist RPM5 style there's AVID's http://avidhifi.com/turntable_ingenium.htm" rel="nofollow - Ingenium - now with an OEM arm and cart I see as the Ingenium PNP. Both arm and cart could be usefully upgraded in the future as the TT is often seen with Jelco and SME arms.

But the choice is very wide!

Definitely would have to be MM and could go to £1500 or perhaps a bit more. Looking at the link in your suggestion looks very similar to the RPM so would not be one of my choices but not bothered whether its belt, Direct Drive etc. Would even consider secondhand for a good quality older model if the price was right.

Your budget will bring plenty of very nice TTs in to play (no pun intended).

I suspect most forum users have quite polarised positions on DD/Belt/idler, in my experience (which is a lot less than some in the forum) DD/Belt do tend to have very different family sounds/characteristics to one another so in changing from one to another you will need to be happy with the change in characteristic suit your own ears, and whilst I have no experience of idler drives since the early/mid-1970s I suspect the same rule applies over a house sound.

Convenience, consistency and easy of set will likely favour DD, for other reasons you may choose belt....

Providing a suitable comparison in a home setting may not be easy (and don't think Graham has started a loan scheme for Turntables yet!) so you may have to rely on reliable recommendations if there is such a thing, dealer auditions, reviews etc.  If you can get hold of something to try at home vs your existing reference deck or even take yours to a good dealer may be another option though these may be difficult rather than impossible to find.

A good second hand TT should bring a lot more in to budget from the £2-3,000 new bracket although as with anything you will need to make sure you aren't buying a lemon.  My deck bought earlier this year is around 35 years old and performing very well but if going down this route please remember the availability of spares (motors, belts etc) as well as the ability to set it up properly to get the most out of it.

If bought via ebay and you decide it isn't for you, you should be able to move it on at little cost whereas new more be more of an issue.
Tongue
It sounds like you may be able to have some fun in the process....

Got to be honest been eying up the Technics SL1010GR for some time and read a few reviews and all are extremely positive. Trying to think what cartridge to fit if I purchased one. Superfi are doing an offer of £100 pounds off if purchasing the turntable and cartridge together no matter what the cost of the cartridge is. May be worth considering.

The 2M Red is a lot of cart for the money, as is it's higher spec stablemate the 2M Blue.

also to consider is where the deck is sited I.e. Is is near the speakers, suspended/concrete floor, platform etc. Floaty floppy suspension is unlikely to be perfectly partnered to suspended timber floors but a solid plinth unit MAY suffer from more feedback in other circumstances than a good suspended

I’m also in the camp of looking at a cartridge upgrade. If you like the 2M sound you’ll probably enjoy the Bronze and Black as well, and they do offer a great deal more (detail, dynamics, texture, separation, phrasing...) as you step up the range. My experience is that it will be a more obvious change to the sound than swapping out the whole deck. Also cheaper.
However, if you’re after a change of deck, I’m on board with the second hand approach if you’re comfortable doing so.
If not, then it’s all trips to dealers to hear what’s out there. In addition to the DD/Belt, and house sound differences, there’s also mass loaded vs lightweight, and suspended or not. So many Options!
Why not just enjoy the process of hearing as much as you can?
Good luck!
Mick.

Good tip. That will sound much better than a well marketed but bland modern turntable.

Follow up to the OP. Bit the bullet and purchased a Thorens TD206 last month and I am very pleased with it. Although the supplied cartridge is cheaper so in theory inferior to the Ortofon 2M Blue I was using previously this does not seem the case!. Seems a good match for this turntable. Perhaps less is more?.

I have the Xtension 10 Evolution and have upgraded the tonarm wire which improved the sound towards a more refined and smooth sound. The connection to the Reflex M is by a Van den Hull D 501 Hybrid from my previos SME 3009 s2 arm. The ultimate upgrade so far was adding a Clearaudio Charisma to it and I have to say it goes well with the 10CC Evolution arm. It’s analog heaven and then some. A few things you could do to your RPM 5 to improve it.Wink
