I've been reading a lot on lencoheaven today and am thinking I may be a little out of my depth.  It's going to be easy enough to get someone to build me a spectacular plinth (I have no woodworking skills or tools), but first I need to decide on what I want/need to be fitted. I'm stuck at the on /off switch! Even after all the reading I've done I don't know what I'm looking for because I don't understand the spec and associated lingo.

I'm not getting any responses on Lencoheaven.  Maybe I'll have more luck here.  I understand that the 2 pole connection is recommended, so I need to source a suitable 2-pole switch and a couple of suitable capacitors. Ideally I would like a switch that illuminates when ON.  I'd be grateful if anyone could point me towards what I need.

I would agree, but that view is the underside with the terminals that are normally hidden under the plinth/fascia. you would need to add a suitable knob to match whatever finish you choose.

That rocker would perhaps fit in the existing switch hole, if that is the plan.
I thought that the rotary switch could be mounted in the existing switch hole and operated with the original lever.

Thank you both Ian & Graham.  The switch will be mounted direct to a new (probably birch ply) plinth. The Lenco top plate will be discarded. I'll be using a PTP so it'll be similar to a PTPaudio Solid9.

Ifor,
I don't see any reason it would not work.
One point to bear in mind with the "spark suppression" capacitors as shown in your wiring diagram, the motor terminals remain "live" even when the switch is off as they are still connected via the capacitors to the mains. Many rebuilt turntables of similar design (Garrard, Thorens and Lenco) are/should be fitted with an IEC switched and fused inlet to provide proper protection and isolation.

Full isolation is best IMO, a chassis switch is good. Ideally unplug the deck from the mains to avoid any risk of electrocution, we'd like to keep you with us Ifor.

Ifor any festive progress on the L75 or even New Year resolutions?

Posted By: ICL1P

Hi Richard, there's been a little progress.  We stayed with my brother and sister in law, in Chester, for a couple of days after Christmas.  This meant i could pick up the second eBay purchase (on the right in the pic); my brother-in-law had collected it from the seller for me.  The second purchase was now no longer a secret from my wife, and if looks could kill...

This second TT (Swiss built, the first is Italian built) is not in such good nick as the first so it's this one I've decided to dismantle first.  The platter would not turn without a shove start, but once turning maintained a constant speed.  On Tuesday night I started dismantling TT2 and took out the bearing.  Last night I took the bearing apart for cleaning, and unsurprisingly it was bone dry; not a hint of any lubrication whatsoever.

It the long run I expect I'll replace the bearing with a new one (several people on Lenco Heaven make and sell them), but in the short term I'll clean and lube the original.  More to follow as things progress ...

Unfortunately progress has been non-existent.

Plan A: still possibly possible, but not as straight forward as I thought it might be,
Plan B: Stefan has given me guide price, which is not initially attractive and the first local cabinet maker I have emailed has not responded; maybe he's not keen on me because I didn't give him the business of building my hi-fi cabinet,
Plan C: the guy was really keen in November, but now he is not taking on any new business,

...

Ian
I'm now think I might just use one of these IEC switched and fused inlets at the back left of the TT and not have a switch on top front.  Ian, I've looked at the DD11 series on the https:////uk.schurter.com/en/datasheet/DD11 - Schurter website  but am am confused by the list of variants at the bottom of the page.  What do I need?  There's a similar one used in this http://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=31271.0 - thread  with some wiring guidance, but I'm sure I'll end up coming back for more help with that at a later date.

Hi Ifor,
This may be a suitable illuminated switch:  http://cpc.farnell.com/bulgin/bva01-z0000-02/inlet-iec-sp-red-illuminated/dp/CN14761 - https://cpc.farnell.com/bulgin/bva01-z0000-02/inlet-iec-sp-red-illuminated/dp/CN14761
or non illuminated:  http://cpc.farnell.com/bulgin/bva01-z0000-10/inlet-iec-dp-non-illuminated/dp/CN14762 - https://cpc.farnell.com/bulgin/bva01-z0000-10/inlet-iec-dp-non-illuminated/dp/CN14762

Does your kit of parts re-use the original switch arrangement? It may be more convenient than having to reach around the back of the deck each time you want to turn off/on and you can retain the original spark suppressor capacitor arrangement.

Ian

Thank you Ian. I've ordered one. The original switch isn't reused. It's a rocket switch operated by a six inch long arm under the top plate.  I think I've flip flopped back to using the push button switch as well.

I'm looking for more help about switches. As well as a switched and fused IEC inlet I want an illuminated push button switch at the front left of the deck.

I got one of these https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F142264810878 -

"Sorry for the late reply.  These switches come with an LED that would take 9-12v AC or DC. (This is important as most switches like these have illumination that only takes DC.). When the switch is turned on, there is a dropping resistor that goes from the live mains tag to the positive tag of the LED on the switch. The negative tag of the LED go to ground.

I used to get these switches from an eBay seller that would send the necessary resistors with the switch. They are rarer because they can take AC. The seller isn't on eBay anymore. (I actually used the last spare on last power amp build this year. I bought  the switches I use back in 2012 and 2014..). If you trawl ebay, you may find similar switches. Just ask the seller for the resistor values after. (If you're using DC in the circuit, you may be able to just tap for the voltage you need)".

So, I've been looking for a switch with an AC compatible LED and have come across this < https://docs-emea.rs-online.com/webdocs/1587/0900766b81587e78.pdf -

I understand that the declared voltage in the UK is now 230V AC +10% to -6%, but that it is still nominally 240V AC.  So, my question is, would this switch be suitable and if so do I need a dropping resistor?  If I do, what would I need.

It's painful being ignorant!

From the specification, no resistor required. The switch is single pole, you need contacts 3 and 4 labelled N/O in the live feed to the motor. The 2 connectors at right angles to the 4 appear to be the led contacts, which should be connected 1 to the live feed to the motor and 1 to neutral. I would suggest that when the connections are soldered the connector terminals are all covered in heat shrink sleeving to afford some protection against accidental contact.

Happy switching

Ifor,
Just a thought, do you really need an illuminated switch? You'll know it's on, the turntable should be going round!LOL
My favoured mains switch is the Lorlin rotary switch, which copes well with (large) inductive loads, such as toroidal transformers that have significant inrush, so will be fine for a turntable motor. They have a  very positive action with a satisfying click.
See:  http://cpc.farnell.com/lorlin/rms1035/rotary-switch-dpst-solder-terminal/dp/SW03716 - https://cpc.farnell.com/lorlin/rms1035/rotary-switch-dpst-solder-terminal/dp/SW03716
Add a suitable knob such as:  http://cpc.farnell.com/unbranded/22h-2d-a/knob-aluminium-22mm/dp/SW02901?st=aluminium%20knob - https://cpc.farnell.com/unbranded/22h-2d-a/knob-aluminium-22mm/dp/SW02901?st=aluminium%20knob

Quite a bit cheaper, if that matters.

Ian, I certainly don’t need an illuminated switch. It’s just for a bit of unnecessary bling. I’ve already got a non-illuminated push button switch, but will consider you rotary option too.  Thank you.

My L75 PTP6 build has not progressed since my last post; too many other things to do!  In the meantime an LED illuminated switch that I had my eye on has come back into stock at RS.  The LED should work at mains voltage, which is the reason I was interested in it, but it's a SPDT switch and I've got no idea how to wire it as a simple on-off switch.  Can anyone advise me?

The data sheet is here  https://docs-emea.rs-online.com/webdocs/1587/0900766b81587e72.pdf - https://docs-emea.rs-online.com/webdocs/1587/0900766b81587e72.pdf

Hi Ifor,
Looking at the contact configuration diagram on the datasheet, you could use terminals 3 & 4 -
the 'normally open' switch contacts to make/break the live wire.
The two centre terminals are presumably the LED. One terminal would need to be wired to the
unswitched mains line & the other to the 'on' side of the switched mains line.
I hope this is correct - please take care with mainsShocked

Ifor,
I would also fit heat shrink sleeving over the switch connections (and any other connections to motor etc) to provide protection against accidental contact.

Have fun.

After several months of inactivity I'm back on this project and trying to remember where I got to with understanding the wiring.  Getting there ...

I had wanted a pushbutton switch with an LED that operates at mains voltage.  I found one at RS Components, but had to wait many months for it to come back into stock.  I have it now, but it's a SPDT switch and not SPST.  I don't think this should be a problem, but now I'm confused.  Ignoring the terminals for the LED, the SPST switches I've played with have three terminals; Common, Normally Open & Normally Closed.  Use C & NO. Simples!

This new switch has four terminals.  According to the data-sheet, terminals 1 and 2 are both NC and terminals 3 and 4 are both NO.

Clearly I need to use either 3 or 4 as my NO, but which do I use for my C?

Hi Ifor,
When pressed terminals 3 and 4, NO & NO are connected together, so it will be these you need to connect in series with the motor.

Thanks Ian. I think I’m going to have to get myself some finer wire than I’ve scavenged from various bits of cable about the place. What gauge or cross sectional area should I be looking for to be as thin as sensible?

Ifor,
I'd use some 0.5mm^2 flex, like that typically used for table lamps and the like. Quite easy to strip out the individual cores. Small hardware shops or Wickes, B&Q etc sell small packs of this type of cable if you haven't an old one you can cannabilise.
Alternatively you could use "equipment wire", but buying a small quantity is difficult.

They certainly used to fill the need for buying single components. Even if they didn't have exactly what you wanted there was usually an alternative that would suffice. Pity they didn't manage to save the online side of the business.

Not adjustable but I really Like these:

I put 4 under a 1.5 inch thick wood platform that my turntable sits on.

Sounds like a Plan. I had a slight problem with footfall since my system is upstairs on a suspended floor. Iso Acoustics took care of it. They are really designed for speakers and I have some on my desktop but I found that they work well under a turntable as well.

Not quite the same as the Iso-pucks but I've got Iso-acoustics Gaia III's under my main speakers and they are much better. I hope that is helpful but I can see the practical issue of height comes into your turntable like anyone else's.

Hi Keith, I had various cables including Chord then Tellurium Q Blacks which were pretty good. When the Spatia cables came out on the loan scheme (my advice is to borrow a set), I thought they were both better and cheaper so bought some for myself.

Even Bob has his limits; his PTP Solid12 has to go to make room for his 301.

I bought two GL75s off eBay, in case I needed parts to make up one, but the second has not been needed. So I’ll have to decide what to do with it.
