My AKG K271 Studio headphones are beginning to fall apart, what should I replace them with?
I am not a big headphone user but they do allow me to listen when others don't want to hear my stuff !
I found the AKGs were sonically ok but uncomfortable after a while. They also have a headband switch which, annoyingly operates just when I don't want it to.
So my preference is:
Over the ear, excellent sound, well made and comfortable and as I don't use them a lot, the price in the reasonable bracket.
Hope that is enough info for some good suggestions.

I gather you are not so enamoured of the AKG that you simply wish to replace them.
For a better quality build and to me, a better sound, the Sony MDR-7506 might be worth a look.
Pricing is virtually on par with the AKG, build quality is visibly better, comfort perhaps similar with a couple of provisos, the earcups are smaller than the AKG being oval rather than round, the faux leather can be a little sweaty (although velour pads can be readily found), they have a non-detachable curly cord.
That said and assuming that the K271 are similar in sound to the K240 (which I have), the bass is more visceral and has greater impact, the mids and upper registers are less dark and more forward with excellent resolution of cymbals and "tinkly bits" and a nice projection of vocals.  Overall a more varied and less bland sonic spectrum IMO.

Thanks for the links and recommends.
I remember the first impression of my AKGs when I opened the box and saw that the AKG decal on the headband had been stuck on skew, these are not built very well. That impression never left me. However my son has a pair of K701s and they look and sound the part. It is not so much the make, it is price point/build quality.
The Sony MDR 7506 models look good and at just under £100 in the UK, so right kind of price.
Being a little, well maybe a lot, lacking in 'head covering' on top, the comfort of the band is important for extended wearing so trying a pair would be bonus. I will search out the local outlets. Sadly Sony in Plymouth have closed so it will be an internet trawl to find who keeps them.

If you do not have any strongly anti-semitic feelings (or family members with such), something like https://www.judaicawebstore.com/kippahs-C109.aspx" rel="nofollow - these might prove both comfortable and decorative as dome protectors when using headphones.
The Sony headband does have some fairly soft foam inserted in it and I think I have even seen padded headband sleeves with press studs as an aftermarket item.

The Superlux headphones are good value for money, but not that robust. The supporting headband has come away from the capsule on one side of my pair (being used by my son).

Tony, he is a music legend and hangs around with the greats, he could get away wearing anything!
If I can't find a comfortable set of cans I might have to adopt a headpiece, but for now.......

My internet searches for retail outlets in the south west has been very disappointing, only one real choice, Richer Sounds. They do have some AKG K550s, Mk2 and Mk3, which could be possibilities.

Peter, it is also true that he does have appropriate ethnicity to lend some authority for the use.
I did spot them for 85 squids with free shipping, but not in the SW and presumably not on approval.

Nearest stockist I found listed seems to be Bristol.

Sony hide them on their professional site and seem to mainly supply them to professional equipment sellers, they are not listed on the consumer products site.

Made a decision. The Sony's get some bad reviews because wires to the earpieces are vulnerable, particularly when folding them. Some buyers have had them fail in less than a year.
I have ordered the AKG K550 Mk3 with free delivery from Richer Sounds. They look robust and are reported as 'comfortable' by many users. I do the occasional sound desk gigs at our local theatre and for our local Drama group so they will get tested!
I will provide an update in a couple of weeks when they have bedded in.

Thanks to all who put in their twopenneth.

Nice clean lines to them, it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on them when they have had a run for a while.

I am told I had Australian Flu, not sure , but it was not one I would wish on anybody. O2 level hit 90 at its worst. Now just left with a tickley cough now which would be ok if I hadn't pulled a stomach muscle before from earlier coughing!

Still, managed an afternoon of listening to Soul on Spotify yesterday and found them very comfortable and with no obvious flaws. Spotify is not really a good test as the quality varies between tracks but it was good for burning in.
More later.

Green beer? Is that a reference to St Paddy's day?

Sounds like a rather unpleasant experience altogether, glad to hear it seems to have passed to a degree then.  I do know how debilitating it is to be constantly coughing and oxygen deprived, you have my sympathy.
Yes, some of the pubs here have had a practice of putting green colouring in beer for St Padraighs day.
I have been known to let headphones "talk to themselves" for some time to aid in loosening them up, but that does depend on there being no-one about to be annoyed by their chattering away.
