Got the glue out yet, Ifor? I'll be watching with interest. I found OSMO Polyx oil gives very good results for finishing, got mine from here: http://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/product/osmo-polyx-oil" rel="nofollow - http://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/product/osmo-polyx-oil I put several coats on with a soft cloth and a light sand after each of the first 2 coats.
Happy building Ian

OSMO Polyx oil, agreed, good stuff, great finish without too much prep.

| Not yet. Fitting a bath shower screen for the girl today and Caroline is using the dining table for upholstery. It’ll have to wait. Osmo Polyx Oil is already what I intend to finish them with. I recently used it on the dining room floorboards. The speakers will get a glossier finish.

Even so the use of tape is clever for butting the edges up. When I was considering a kit or a self build I was going to use the old school glue and pin (thin nails) of my youthful speaker DIY.

i'm looking for help now. My soldering skills are not good, but i have successfully built a couple of Genera phono stages. How do i best set about attaching the internal speaker wire to the speaker binding posts? I've been trying for a while and have, so far, been unsuccessful. It's what i struggled with most when building the FH3s for the boy, but that time i managed. i think i'm dealing withe thicker speaker cable this time.

I used Spatia wire, it's much thinner. For the thicker cable cut a few strands out so that you can thread it through the hole or make the hole bigger then solder. It will need a quite a bit of heat/time for the heavy brass part to get hot enough for the solder to flow. It's generally good practise to "tin" the parts first, ie apply a small amount of solder to coat each part before you bring them together, usually helps in getting the heat into the heavier part before you apply solder. Thanks Ian. I used Spatia wire for the FH3s, which is probably why i’m Finding this so much more difficult. I’m not sure my soldering iron is man enough for it.

I would think that it would need at least a good 25W iron with a heavy chisel style bit. An alternative might be to use a solder tag type washer. Much easier to solder and fit as they are secured to the post with an extra nut. Perhaps a bit late to say this, but I use 4mm Instrument sockets on speakers and terminate my speaker cables with BFA 4mm BANANA PLUGS Z-type Gold Plated Cable Connectors http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-BFA-4mm-BANANA-PLUGS-Z-type-Gold-Plated-Hollow-Speaker-Cable-Connectors/302480843779?hash=item466d436403:g:kVIAAMXQ01tRUKwW" rel="nofollow - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-BFA-4mm-BANANA-PLUGS-Z-type-Gold-Plated-Hollow-Speaker-Cable-Connectors/302480843779?hash=item466d436403:g:kVIAAMXQ01tRUKwW

I would carefully tease the stranded wire into two halves, twist and tin them separately.Tin the flat bits of your terminal, then run one wire through the hole in your terminal, solder it with a 25W iron to the terminal, and sold the two wire ends together.

I think I've found some Spatia left over from the FH3s. Does this look right? If so, can someone remind of the science as to why a cross sectional area of about one third is as good, or better (based on all the Spatia user experiences i've read) than what I've been trying to work with?

Hi Ifor, The larger is I guess about 2.5mm2, good enough to carry up to 30 amps. To me this is overkill for a speaker rated at a few watts taking at most 2-3amps for full output. I like to think of Spatia as being far more "agile" in its ability to carry the signal. Whatever the reason, Spatia brings a significant improvement to the sound.

| Ian, what type of soft cloth did you use? I’ve applied a fist coat with a brush, but don’t really want to buy a new brush for each coat. Cloths might be cheaper that Osmo Brush Cleaner.

Hi Ifor, I used some fine sponge for the first coat, then soft cotton cloth from old pillowcases/sheets. Make the cloth into a pad and apply in even light strokes in the same direction as the grain. For large areas I use the cloth wrapped around a sponge as it holds more liquid. If the surface is really smooth and finished with 600 grade AlOx "sandpaper", then just the cloth is OK, a light sanding with 600 grade after the first coat improves the depth of shine if you're really fussy!
Have fun Ian

Is this a new design across the Frugal horn range? Only the sides look to be chamfered rather butted.
Made some XL’s about a year ago, sound excellent.

Made some XL’s about a year ago, sound excellent. | It is the newest of the FH range. Stefan at KJF Audio has cut them all this way now, but not yet shown in the pictures on his website. His idea is that no clamping is needed, just tape.

When it comes to refinishing car paint and metalwork 600 grade is quite coarse, finer than Aluminium Oxide, Silicon Carbide paper grade 1200, 1800 and even 2400 are available.

I got a bit disheartened, because I messed up when putting the FH Lites together, having previously told you all how easy it was! I didn't have them lined up as well as I should have, which came as a bit of a shock when I finally glued the the final side to each speaker. I had a proud edge on each that needed sanding away and I haven't got the perfect finish that Stefan's new cuts are designed to produce. Anyway, in the end I'm pleased enough and importantly so is the girl. Job done!
