I have inherited this Thorens TT. Sadly before I used it in anger it was dropped and the weighty turntable top broke the motor spindle!
I have now found a good replacement motor on Ebay, it spins even more smoothly than the original. I have also bought a new drive belt and so am just about to start a rebuild.
I am contemplating also replacing the motor caps, the originals have never shown any problems but they are pretty old.
What would others do?
Would you contemplate doing anything else?

My intention was to refurb' it to sell it however it it sounds better than my Dual 505 it might be the Dual that goes!Smile

Based on the TD160 I looked at, a full service cleaning with relubing and checking level/bounce etc. will do wonders. I was very impressed by Adam's deck but am glad he took my advice and put it on a wall shelf. Before swapping out the caps I would check it is needed, assuming the desk starts and stops correctly I would test the speed with a strobe or an RPM app.

Please keep us posted on the Dual/Thorens shootout!

All done! New belt and a really quite motor, all lube'd up and running smooth.
The original stylus in it is an ADC 770 so I also spent a little while cleaning the stylus and its cantilever which looked 'organic' with my magnifying headset! I would guess the stylus is worn and would benefit from replacing but if I going to sell the TT that can be the choice the new owner makes, refurb or replace.
So down to a listening comparison with my regular TT, my Dual 505-1 with its relatively new Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge.
I used my new copy of Sgt Pepper which is 180 gm disc and has had very few plays. Over several tracks it was difficult to hear any difference at all but my impression was that my Dual had a little more brightness but the sound of the Thorens was very easy to listen to and really didn't lack anything. I guess the different stylus and wear could explain the slight differences I heard.
Reading comments on-line about the Thorens it has always been rated as a good value for money TT. Built like a tank and likely to last, it has.
A couple of personal negatives. There is no fine speed control and the hanging weight bias arrangement seems really vague, but it does seem to work.

Decided I will sell the Thorens but unsure of the best place to list it.
E**y seems to only attract people looking for bargains.
I can put it on this Forum but I sort of think most here will already have a good TT and might only looking for better. I am not sure, even with a new Cartridge, it will ever be more than Good/Very Good.

Any suggestions?

Yes it has the benefit that it can be local, a bit 'general' though.

I didn't know that. I'm out of ideas then. I have never sold my old HiFi I have always given it to a charity shop, That I know do good work. I do tend to keep my HiFi for a long time before up grading  so it's worth is minimal and I can't be bothered with the hassle
