Dear All,
I'm stoked with the performance of my electronics and it's now time to consider something a little different for speakers. I've owned my NotePerfect Ovations since 2000 and I've loved them, but I'm wanting to try something a little different.

So, can you tell me what speakers you use with your Proprius and the general strengths you perceive in the combination?

Cheers,
Mick.

For the last couple of years Monitor Audio GX300's with Spatia internal wiring and my crossover level mods. I have also had the Proprius connected to GX100's, an old set of AE 505's, and a variety of test speakers. The amps work wonders with anything.

I have the Proprius amps next to the GX300's using very short speaker cable runs and balanced cable for the longer run from Majestic to Proprius amps. I recommend trying this if you can.

I have had my Monitor Audio SR6 floorstanding speakers for more than twelve years now, and I think they make a very nice couple with the Proprius. A very well-balanced and rounded (?) sound - even if a bit (too)bright maybe, now and then(?) But I am thinking about stepping up to a 'better' pair of speakers. I am not certain yet which ones I would prefer/choose, but possibly Monitor Audio, because I love their general sound signature.

Originally ProAc Response One SE monitors but lately Frugal Horn XL kit speakers. They have usurped the ProAcs (which I can't quite believe).

Proprii power either with easy.

I don't yet have a pair of Proprii (shouldn't be too long now). They'll be with a pair of Spendor A5s. Having heard "the boy's" Frugal Horn 3s, I'd love to try the XLs, but there just isn't the space in the sitting room.

Hi. How did you find them driving Spendor A5s? Or anyone else with lower sensitivity speakers?
I will be in the market for a new amp in a couple of weeks and Majestic with Proprius seem very intriguing. I think I will give Jon a shout once I get back from holiday in 2 weeks time to see if I can try this combination.

Regards,
Aurimas

A loan would definitely be the best way to go!

My Proprii drive some PMC Gb1i speakers, but these are pretty efficient. Fantastic sound, with Graham's Spatia speaker cable too Wink.

Thanks, I see they are 87dB, same sensitivity as mine. Though mine are rated at 4 Ohms - would that be a concern? Probably not. Anyway one way to find out is to give a try! :)

I use my Proprius amplifiers with a pair of DNM Fact 8 speakers. Music is provided by a Squeezebox Touch through a Majestic. The sound is absolutely amazing. Even though the amps are only 25 W each they provide enough volume to blow your roof off! I can't recommend these amps enough. If you are in any doubt borrow a pair and you will see what I mean.

DNM?  I thought they were PMCs.

You're quite right Ifor and a lovely pair of speakers they are to. I dictate into my computer and I missed my mistake. It's very easy not to spot when it gets things wrong.

Hi All,
So I think there are at least three of us using PMCs. Gb1i, Fact 8 and Twenty5.22. Maybe we should lobby PMC to ditch their own amp and use Graham’s products!
Mick.

At the budget end I bought a pair of second hand KEF Q100 speakers to be my home cinema front speaker because they are much smaller than the open baffles I had been using and also to explore the coaxial UniQ drivers.

Naturally I hooked the Q100's up to my Proprius amps and was quite impressed at the sound quality they give at a low price. It's also hard to overlook the amount of low bass they push out from a quite small mid/bass cone, but the sound is a littel rougher and less revealing than my GX300's which cost a lot more. So that's yet another speaker type I've enjoyed with the exellent proprius amps.

I'm also using a pair of DNMs 😉 with my Proprius since last Christmas. A very nice pair of Twenty.23 floorstanders, also paired with Spatia cables and links. They're quite fussy about source I've found but a great record sounds absolutely smashing. Can't believe the large sound coming from those tiny drivers and the slender cabinets.

hi Johan,
Indeed it’s enormous! I had to choose tweet the 22 and 23 when I bought, and it was very difficult to do so. I think they all look fantastic, too. Domestically acceptable AND wonderful sound.
Cheers,
Mick.

I wonder what the Klipsch RP-150m would sound like (considering their - from what I understand - very clear highs and somewhat neutral midrange?) when connected to the Propriuses.

Jan,
I sometimes wonder how great it would be to have an unlimited supply of different speakers to discover things like that. A friend of mine loves his Klipsch pair (sorry, not source which model, but I know they’re aren’t terribly big), but we’ve not gotten around to doing an amp swap. I’m always fascinated by how different speakers can sound depending on amplification.
Mick.

I've been running Monitor Audio RS6s on the end of my Proprii for a while now.  They've been excellent for everything but imaging so I thought I'd treat myself to a set of stand mounted speakers.  Having auditioned some current well reviewed ones I was less than impressed so I started wondering and some of those classic studio monitors.

No bookshelf style speaker is going to produce deep bass but many now give up around the 50hz mark and assume that you will use a subwoofer.

To cut a long story short I chanced on a pair of immaculate Tannoy 607 mk2s. One thing that attracted me to them was an 8'" bass driver which you don't often see in a stand mount but might result in better bass. The only review I could find online was for the mk1  which basically said some fine engineering but the result was a troubled midrange so avoid for any sort of vocal use.

We'll to my ears it looks like they sorted it for the MK2.  They image well, mid range is a treat.  The tweeter is of its time but is still nice and detailed with none of the harshness you often hear  in earl metal domes.  You can hear the benefits of the larger bass driver as bass detail is as good as I've heard in a stand mount.

The online review compared the 607 to Rogers LS7s which still sell for the wrong side of £500 but I'd suggest the mk2s are probably in that ball park.

I paid less than £50 for a near immaculate pair complete with the matching stands.

If you see some for sale near you for that sort of money give them a go.  To my ears, you'd have to spend almost a grand to get a new pair of stand mounts of similar quality.

My Proprius amps are driving s pair of Magnepan SMGa's that I have refurbished over the last few months. I am enjoying the dipolar operation and  tall thin panels, a full range and full height sound. They are 4 ohm speakers with lower sensitivity but the amps do a fine job with a range of music genres at any sound level I want.

Proprii now driving a pair of Kef R7 Meta, a 4 ohm 88dB floor stander with 2 bass drivers. Can’t quite believe the abilities of these tiny silver boxes.

Another example of their abilities. I've been using Proprii to drive my Fyne Audio F500SPs for almost 2 years now. Just amazing performance from the dimunitive Proprii powerhouses. More volume than I'll ever need and such clarity with deep rhythmic bass.

Thanks Ernie, I quite like the look of the KEFs too. As you may recall from previous posts, I too built a pair of Frugelhorn XLs. They were remarkable for a single full range driver, but very fussy about positioning. I enjoyed them for some years before I decided I could justify the expense of the Fynes. I also considered QAcoustics and the KEFs, but got such a good deal on the Fynes I couldn't refuse.

Congratulations! I have heard some Fynes and was impressed, very musical. A few months ago I bought a pair of ex-demo Martin Logan electrostatic speakers. The Proprius amps handle their impedance without any difficulties and sound great.

Bargain price of the Kefs swayed me. Graphite grey can’t be a popular colour. £2.7k for £4.2k speakers. Couldn’t resist.

That was indeed a bargain. I do like the less common finishes, I chose the Gloss White, which nicely complements our decor.
Whereas the Mark Audio drivers in the Frugelhorns took several hundred hours to really come to life, I found the Fynes only took around 50-60 hours to lose the edginess and develop full bass. Have you noticed any improvement in sound as you use them more?

Yes but I’m moving them around at the moment to get all the cables tidy. Plus I’m working away this week so no time to play with them properly.

I’m going to do the Sumiko master set up procedure when I get home. Last time I mentioned it on the forum somebody thought I was taking the pi## but I got some very interesting results from following it. The track you have to play really sticks in your head though so you’ve been warned!

If you fancy a go.
