Most new vinyl these days seems to cling & crackle with static. I read a lot about the supposed charge-taming qualities of cork so bought a 'corkstone spot mat' on ebay when I was in America in July.

Having used this for several weeks, it really does seem effective. Even an LP that fought to stay in its sleeve no longer seem statically charged during or after play - brand new & previously heavily charged records lift off the mat without clinging afterwards. However if I move the vinyl close to my face I can still feel a slight static charge so the mat certainly doesn't neutralise the charge completely.

The 'pepperami with extra cheese' style may not be in keeping with the look of my turntable but I am going to keep using this. I don't really understand why - but it works.

(the spots add several mm to the mat thickness so adjustable arm height is necessary)

Looks good from the picture. I have never understood the practice of static causing crackles and pops or at least have never suffered from it.

Is it the actual static or the static attracting debris which causes the clocks etc? (Sorry for appearing dim but just trying to understand the issue/cause)?
