Much more than 'the fifth Beatle' he had a career of creative musical work and we'd have a lot less in our record collectio0ns without him. RIP Sir George Martin.

A sad day. He seemed to be a genuinely nice guy, and talented musician. He leaves a great recorded legacy.

More sad news

In his own words... "I’ve had a bloody good innings. I can’t imagine anyone who’s been luckier than I have with the kind of artists I’ve been able to record"

I remember his own 1967 "hit": Theme One. I heard it every morning on the old steam radio when R1/2 started up at 5 a.m. whilst getting ready to go to work or college as an apprentice.

It was also released by Van Der Graaf Generator and Tommy Vance used it as his theme on the Saturday Rock Show.

Others covered it including Bigelf and Cozy Powell.

I used to listen to "Theme one " just before midnight,in my car on a portable radio, before driving home!
