I just got a new computer running Windows 8 and the driver I have for my USB DAC doesn't seem to support this OS. And from the looks of their website it seems that the maker of my DAC has gone out of business, as no links to their products or how to get in touch with them work and hasn't for quite some time. So not much hope in getting a driver update there from in other words. Does anyone know of any other solution that might work? Could a driver for a different DAC perhaps work or is it impossibe?

Solution: The Bitzie!

Works with Windows 8!

Yes it might come to that if I can't get it to work but I'm hoping I can keep my old DAC really. It was a good performer and the puny age of 2 years shouldn't make a £400 unit completely obsolete. There has got to be some other solution I reckon

You should be able to load Windows 7 drivers in Windows 8 for such applications.

Yet somehow I can't seem to.
Now what was wrong with Windows 7 exactly? I consider it vastly superior to the confusion and awkwardness that is Windows 8. Progress for progress' sake?

Perhaps Microsoft have never heard of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Does seem that chasing progress for it's own sake underlies many businesses these days. We aren't necessarily any the richer for their progress.
I upgraded from 7 to 8, underneath the Apps opening page, back on the desktop it's just like Windows 7, so much so I wonder if it is just 7. Accordingly I manage to load drivers for both 7 and 8. Don't know if a new build loaded primarily with Windows 8 behaves differently.

Great ad for the Bitzie... only £350 and takes to Windows 8 without searching for downloads!

(sorry, it must be my age long frustration with being generally ignored... not vented at anybody here)

Indeed! Where could I get one of these marvellous Bitzies, Graham?

Seriously though I was astonished by the sound I heard. Almost incredible - please pm me if you haven't tried a Bitzie already.

Thanks Jon. I'll drop Derek a pm if I can't get my DAC to work with Windows 8, or have you taken over the European loaner program yourself?

I know exactly how that feels... In the end, I just gave up on people altogether. Dead

and... let's say £400 as one would be silly to get your Bitzie without the Lautus cable.

The pair offers tremendous performance. Don't worry Graham, I don't ignore you. Usually though, with your theory, I typically don't have a clue what you're talking about so I read it, scratch my head then move on. LOL

Yes, sometimes it makes me wonder how I learned all that stuff, and sometimes I wonder why I didn't learn about spin instead. With spin I could be youthful and enjoying life to the full, instead of looking like one of the Rolling Stones (except they're in their 70s). Spin does actually work - the now multimillionaire Blair proved that - and Hi-Fi magazines use it as it saves space for advertising. But spin alone cannot make a successful hi-fi business, no, what you also need is a very old Maplin catalogue for your circuits... bingo!

"Teachers open the door; you enter by yourself."

To me, it seems that Master Slee has suffered (both financially and via intellectual exhaustion) so that we do not have to, clearing away the audio BS for us so that we can just focus on playing the music we like. I'm not particularly keen on how this place has been described as a holy place for Slee worshippers,Cry especially as I am completely impartial and just enthusiastic to find my main man. However though, after following the equipment suggestions of Master Slee on more than one occasion, it's pretty clear that I've made a lot of progress already; I can now assess all of my CDs in much greater resolution than ever before. I say this as a non-brainwashed young man.

Back in June 2012, I bought the Sennheiser HD600 and I searched incessantly every single day for equipment to extract the most from them. I was like a man possessed (and obsessed). With my searches, I was always walking the tightrope between monitoring purposes and hi-fi leisure purposes, always viewing products and thinking to myself: "not good enough, not good enough, will I ever find an end to this nonsense?!" It wasn't until I was on ebay one day looking up how many people were selling their (coloured) HD650s that I finally saw a picture of a Graham Slee solo. I soon found myself on the main site, viewing it, sending a message about the ULDE and I finally began to dive further into the truth. And this time, the truth was much less expensive than I had previously realised. If one can get over Graham's initial (and typically) harsh words, you will be on to a winner, I assure you. All you have to do is leave the silly obsession with specifications at the front door and enter. Thumbs Up

Slightly off main topic,

..... not completely ignored,  Andrew Simpson suggested Graham Slee phono stages (as well as another unfortunately) as a response in the letters page of the latest edition of HiFi Choice.
