I was looking to upgrade the Ortofon 2M Red fitted on my Pro-Ject Debut Genie. I have had a chance to hear the Ortfon 2M blue which has a similiar neutral sound but with better detail and a smoother  treble. My dealer has suggested a Sumiko Pearl, which is about half the price- he claims that it has a warm fluid presentation and is more engaging than the Ortfon.

Has anyone had any experiance of this cartidge.

I have a Sumiko Pearl. It does have its plus points I must agree. However, I find the Goldring 1042 better IMO and to my tastes. Better than that is the Ortofon VMS20EII which brings the music more alive and more fluid. With the Goldring 1042 some records just don't "kick ass" and with the Pearl the bass is more wooden.

As is typical for me, all the great sounding products have been discontinued - for example: the Ortofon VMS20EII... the Sennheiser HD250II, and so on.

Thanks Graham , the wooden bass is a bit of a turn off though the idea of a warmer presentation is appealing. I only stumbled on vynil this year. Playing led Zeppelin on vynill was a stunning experiance and sounded so alive

Should be better using a 1042 I reckon.

The best budget MM by far must be the AT95E at around £25!

However, for detail you need to spend the extra cash - unfortunately. Wink

You could always buy a cheaper 1012 and upgrade the stylus to a 22 or 42 when funds allow.
