Subject: 20 Desert Island Albums List

So here it goes. The definitive 20 Albums you would bring to a desert island to make due with for possibly the rest of your life. I chose to make it 20 albums as the list stays poignant enough but still not too hard to make, i hope. Double albums count as one.
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Sgt. Pepper
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Yes - Fragile Close to the Edge
Genesis - Foxtrot
Selling England By The Pound
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Roxy Music - Country Life
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Moondance
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Sam Cooke - Night Beat
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Thick as a Brick Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left Bryter Layter
Surely I've forgotten about an album or two that I would have put on here but that's inevitable I guess. Now I'm looking forward to reading all of your lists!
Cheers! Johan

Thanks for making this happen Suede! My 20 albums:
Beatles - Revolver, Abbey Road
Who - Live at Leeds, Who's Next
Kate Bush - Aerial, Hounds of Love
Beats International - Let them eat Bingo
Burning Spear - Garvey's Ghost
Radiohead - The Bends
The The - Mindbomb
Smiths - The Queen is dead
Sex Pistols - Never mind the bollocks
Michael Hedges - Aerial boundaries
Paul Weller - Wild Wood
B.B. King compilation
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona
Ry Cooder - Paris Texas
Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
I used two criteria: what have I listened to over the last few years and what would I miss.

Thanks for sharing your list Jon. Reminds me I haven't listened to Ogden's Nut Gone Flake for a good while , it's great fun! Good point to add your criteria too! Mine was mainly albums I never seem to tire of even though I've heard them so many times I know them like the back of my hand.

Here's my list (in no particular order):
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers Jethro Tull - Aqualung J. J. Cale - Naturally Caravan - If I Could Do It Again I'd Do It All Over You Dire Straits - Dire Straits John Mayall - The World Of (Mono) + The Beano album Gerry Rafferty - I'd take every single one of his albums! However if I had to limit the selection to just 3, I'd pick City To City, Sleepwalking, and Another World Gary Moore - Blues For Greeny Joe Bonamassa - Live From Nowhere In Particular Mark Knopfler - Shangri-La Paul Rodgers - Muddy Water Blues Holst - The Planets
My criteria are the same as Suede's - I've heard them all countless times before, yet I can happily listen to them again and again. For me, they would constitute essential desert island listening.

You've got me re-thinking my list Hotmog, especially the John Mayall Beano album! Good choice. I nearly put Muddy Waters at Newport in my list, the AAM Brandenburg Concertos, and Back in Black... I sense another mix tape list coming.

I was naively assuming that the albums had been digitised via something like Audacity, and loaded on to an iPod or mp3 player. It would be powered or charged up using a solar panel like the ones you leave on the dashboard to trickle-charge a car battery.

We could try shortlisting a percentage of the owner's music collection. But it's not as simple as picking 20 albums. Mind you it was 10 songs originally, wasn't it?

Yes, but I soon realised 10 albums would be too hard. There you could really talk about an ever changing list As for the one percent of ones collection list, mine's not quite that huge... yet. So top 20 still gives me a longer list. How long would your list be?

Thank you Bob! I think you managed 20 allright. A lot of classical stuff I see. I didn't really have room on mine as I much more often listen to pop music or jazz but I do very much enjoy classical music as well. Mostly then it's piano sonatas or smaller ensembles of strings and woodwinds or such. I love hearing a full symphony live, not too often one does though, but I've always found that sadly they lose too much of their grandeur in recorded format. They always sound a litle underwhelming to me. Or maybe I've just never found a well enough pressed record? Still, seems I really must check out Walton's first symphony anyway! I don't think I've ever heard it previously

A current Walton 1 which is good, Johan, is Martyn Brabbins on Hyperion. But Previn's 1966 RCA has the energy and impetus which IMO just keeps it at the top of the pile, though the recording shows its age.
I saw/heard the LSO live last year and the sheer dynamics and impact of a live performance are breathtaking!

Ah yes, Bax! That Chandos box is sumptuous music and recording! Mind you the Lloyd-Jones set on Naxos is pretty good. But my favourite Bax 5 is an old Lyrita LP with Raymond Leppard. I put that through the RCM recently and it came up really well....

Hello all.
I have been refining this list over the last few weeks, aiming to be ruthless in weeding out albums that just wouldn't cut it on a desert island, taking in as many flavours as possible (though I have parked classical as it would take too long to make such difficult selections!) and as far as possible favouring music that has stood the test of my time. There were lots of other very worthy albums considered but all others had too many flaws... it was somewhat by accident that I ended up with 20! In purely chronological sequence of original release (courtesy wikipedia, some of these may be US dates):
"A Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis (17Aug59)... an ongoing soundtrack to life, revealed to me during a perfect few days in North Wales in 1985
"Revolver" by The Beatles (5Aug66)... possibly the most accomplished set of pop songs ever
"Hejira" by Joni Mitchell (Nov76)... high-order sung-poetry set to sublime playing and arrangements, a magical and congruent soundscape
"Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac (4Feb77)... high-order real life soap opera with emotion and heavenly harmonies
"The Wall" by Pink Floyd (30Nov79)... Hearing RW talk about his father on a DID archive recently affirmed The Wall as a magnificent piece of storytelling... oh, and Comfortably Numb!
"Heaven Up Here" by Echo & The Bunnymen (30May81)... beautiful bleak landscapes never to be repeated, the most significant soundtrack of my youth
"Pornography" by The Cure (3May82)... brooding and beautiful, Robert Smith's slightly discordant guitar lines over insistent rhythms, cries and laments absorbed in the dark
"Signals" by Rush (9Sep82)... one of the longest slow-burns ever reveals electric passion, playing, melody and tales of paranoia, ambition, desolation, celebration.
"Treasure" by Cocteau Twins (1Nov84)... on release it captivated with its unique soundscape and layers, a very significant influence
"Hounds of Love" By Kate Bush (16Sep85)... the little girl becomes a woman in her own utterly enchanting world, notionally a pop record.
"The Joshua Tree" by U2 (9Mar87)... its reputation is pompous and bombastic, I hear some magic and even moments of insight. I proudly procured a vinyl copy 2 days before its original release.
"Spirit of Eden" by Talk Talk (16Sep88)... once described as a piece of musical moving meditation, spiritual & not just in Mark Hollis' words
"Little Earthquakes" by Tori Amos (13Jan92)... soundtrack to early days with my (now) wife, dysfunctional bitterness and pain delivered with control and virtuoso performances
"Toward The Within" by Dead Can Dance (24Oct94)... captures their moment of recognition, achievement and subsequent near collapse, Lisa and Brendan weave their spells, earthly and 'other'
"To Bring You My Love" by PJ Harvey (27Feb95)... still young, Miss Polly, bearing a facade of absolute confidence, crawling across the desert, crying, screaming and longing
"White Ladder" by David Gray (Nov98)... Of its time and yet timeless, despite his affected tone - Sail Away and others still draw the tears out
"Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol 1" by Jill Scott (18Jul00)... seeks to defy categorisation in its coherent story telling and modern R&B jazz soundscape, tunes too!
"In Rainbows" by Radiohead (10Oct07)... after five years its density still challenges but the beauty never fails to beguile
"High Violet" by The National (10May10)... moody Midwest geniuses, pushing some boundaries and hopefully still ahead of their peak
"Build A Rocket Boys" by Elbow (4Mar11)... a modern day folk hero fully in command of his faculties, pictures of English real life to stir the soul

Thank you for the kind feedback .
Given the skewed chronology of my list (yes I am a child of the 80s), I would be very interested to read any kind of commentary on everyone's special records. I read through all the lists again... much of the music I am familiar with but a vivid perspective can be worth its weight in gold to hear songs again through different ears... Nick Hornby's commentary on Aimee Mann made me think and then listen to her very differently. The Magnolia soundtrack was not far off making the list.
Many of the other artists I am entirely unfamiliar with and would welcome some kind of 'entry point', whether that's personal reference, meaning, narrative or more technical aspects.
Best
James

Seeing reference to this
thread today, I thought I would add my twopenneth. All of these really mean a
lot to me and the fact that several are pretty worn out, or have been replaced must
say something! Aplologies my notes are a bit
rambling & it’s full of old stuff but it’s hard to beat the impact of music from when we were young. In no particular order…..
The Who - Who’s Next -
Contains two of my favourite songs -
Behind Blue Eyes & Won’t Get Fooled Again. The favourite band from
my youth, memories only spoiled by seeing Roger Daltrey come back for the
encore at Wireless Leeds 2006 clutching a cup of tea. I don’t remember that in the
70’s!
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells.
- A perfect album, a group of us skived off from games afternoon at school to
listen to this the day it was released. Stunning at the time
& still is
Fairport Convention - Liege
& Lief – The band/families lived in an old pub called the Angel a few doors
down from our house & I used to listen to them jamming in their garden as a kid. They
got me into music - went to their live
gig in our farmers field (!) when I was 13. The albums ‘Angel Delight’ &
‘Full House’ were written in /about our village although Sandy Denny lived in
the next one
Genesis - Selling England By
The Pound - Played continually since 1973, just beating Foxtrot to this list
although Suppers Ready is one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded in
my opinion.
The Moody Blues – A Question
Of Balance – ‘Question’ being a fabulous song in its own right. I do need to
replace my old, worn out vinyl copy though
Dr Feelgood - Stupidity – Memories of nights at the
Kursaal Southend, mono & live (my Nan & Grandad lived nearby so I spent a lot of time
there)
Porcupine Tree - My favourite PT
album changes regularly because they are all great. Fear Of A Dead Planet just
edges out In Absentia, Deadwing & Coma Divine. Steven Wilsons latest
offering could easily beat the lot in a few years but as it’s so new, that may
just be fresh enthusiasm so I’ll leave it for now
Jimi Hendrix - Electric
Ladyland. I have 2 artists that I regret never seeing live and Jimi is
one, he died just before I ‘got into’ music
Fleetwood Mac - The Best Of Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac - I
am pleased to say that this has also become my 29yr old daughters favourite
album. At least one of the family has excellent music taste. Green
Manalishi IS my favourite piece of music
Cat Stevens - Teaser & The
Firecat – sublime… what else can I say?
Rolling Stones - Sticky
Fingers …just edges out Let It Bleed because I couldn’t be without ‘Can't
You Hear Me Knocking’ but very close between these two
albums
The Ramones - Ramones Mania –
a double vinyl with most of their best stuff. Blitzkrieg Bop, Somebody Put Something In My Drink, I just Wanna Have Something To Do & Sheena
Is A Punk Rocker remind me of my youth & would help keep me fit dancing about on the island !
Gordon Giltrap - Visionary – I
still recall the effect of hearing ‘Lucifers Cage’ & ‘The Tyger’ on the
Alan Freeman show for the first time & these two never fail to raise the
hairs on my neck! (Perilous.. & Fear.. are probably better albums but I couldn’t
be without these 2 songs)
Nirvana - Nevermind – edgy & full of raw energy, Smells Like
Teen Spirit is also up there as one of my favourite songs
Gandalf Murphy & The
Slambovian Circus of Dreams - Flapjacks
From The Sky. Great double album from a small, cult US band. ‘70’s sounding folk-psych-rock.
Worth seeing live when they (rarely) tour the UK. They have a wonderful
guitarist called Sharkey - his occasional slide mandolin playing is exceptional
Alan Parsons - Eye in the Sky – All his albums are great
but this is my preferred choice. ‘Old & Wise’ will be played at my funeral
Taj Mahal - Natch’l Blues –
bought this second hand in the early 70’s and still love it – a real ‘fun’ album,
a word not often associated with the blues
Styx - Paradise Theatre. –
excellent ‘concept’ prog. Side 2 from ‘Snowblind’ onwards is fabulous, even
better than the rest of this great album. After getting married the year
before, this was the first album I bought in over 12 months, having been somewhat
distracted….
Klaatu - Klaatu (3:47 EST) – Bought second hand a couple of years
after it was released because I wanted the original version of ‘Calling
Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft’. Anyone who’s into 70’s rock should hear
this incredible long, proggy song, nothing like the syrupy Carpenters version
Haken - Aquarius – Prog with a
twist and quite remarkable, it has everything but overall is surprisingly melodic. Very highly
recommended and hard to believe this was a debut album
There you are…I guess it’s
obvious that I am predominantly a Blues, Rock & Prog fan. Cream, Floyd,
Zep, Crimson, Tull, Purple, CSNY, Springsteen etc fall just below these 20. Apart from Sandy and a brief bit of Christine McVie on Fleetwood, they are all male and I hope that doesn't make me look sexist. I have a huge number of female vocal bands or solo singers too
Other things for a Desert
Island….portable music player, solar panels to charge it & headphones. I should
also include a GSP headphone amp of course. As I haven’t got one yet, perhaps
the Voyager could be recharged by the panels?

Glad LOINER resurrected this thread. It was an interesting exercise. For
my selections, a few are actually examples of long given away vinyl that are
fondly recalled and would be welcomed back to the island(I think), most are rips to AIFF from CD. Where particularly memorable and/or perhaps unusual, I added
some brief commentary. Here goes…
- Keep on Doing, The Roches – Trio of sisters; stirring, yet quirky;
folkie yet different (Produced by Robert Fripp).
- Graceland, Paul Simon – a watershed album for me that opened my ears
to the idea of world music.
- Pirates, Rickie Lee Jones
- Ten Song Demo, Rosanne Cash – not really a country fan, but great vocals,
nicely recorded with stripped down arrangements.
- Getz/Gilberto, Stan Getz – bossa nova was my introduction into jazz.
- Rockin’ and Romance, Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers – could be
any of a number of albums from mid 70’s through the mid 80’s. Perhaps not
blessed with the most musical talent, but there is an innocence and love of
making music that is captivating and infectious (to me anyway). Jo-Jo always
gets my toe tapping and makes me smile.
- Greatest Stories Live, Harry Chapin – double live album captures that
concert vibe and rapport among the musicians; brings me back to Massey Hall in Toronto where I saw him on
multiple occasions.
- Love Has Come For You, Edie Brickell + Steve Martin
- Privateering, Mark Knopfler
- Live at the Mauch Opera House, The Wailin’ Jennys – female folk trio,
solo endeavors are also very worthy. (Ruth Moody has recently toured with MK in
Europe in support of Privateering)
- if the moon turns green…, Diana Pantin – compelling female jazz singer
from just down the road
- Talking Timbuktu, AIi Farka Toure and Ry Cooder
- Speechless, Bruce Cockburn – could choose any of a number of releases
dating from early 70’s through to present day. Chose a collection of his
instrumental compositions that showcase his craft as a composer and musician.
- Songs for Swingin’ Lovers, Frank Sinatra
- Temptation, Holly Cole
- Judy at Carnegie Hall, Judy Garland
- Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall, Rufus Wainwright – I quite enjoy
doing a session alternating between the original Judy version, followed by Rufus’
interpretation, song by song, for the entire album. Not an absolute top
favourite by itself, but something different for the island.
- Not Too Late, Norah Jones
- Lifes Rich Pageant, R.E.M.
- Odessa, The Bee Gees – still remember the English film Melody with
Jack Wild and Tracy Hyde that used some of the music. Like others, I'm sure I could pick another 20 and be no less happy, but these will do fine. Regards,

Some great stuff here. I have been a longtime Bruce Cockburn fan and was lucky enough to pick up 6 LPs in Grenwich Village this March, almost completing my collection. His albums are generally very well produced & mixed. I agree about Odessa, their best album (Trafalgar is almost as good) but I wish my LP had the cool velvet cover! . Graceland is another absolute classic
A couple of people have recently mentioned Ali Farka Toure & my daughter has loads of this so I think I will give it a try.....thanks Steve

If I would remake my list I'd definitely find a place in it for Graceland, it's just such an awesome record. I also really like the Paul Simon album that came before it; Hearts And Bones, I think of it as sort of a stepping stone to Graceland. Strange thing is it seems to have been severely panned by critics on its release and sold quite poorly despite IMO being a huge leap forward from One Trick Pony and definitely paving the way for Graceland. And the haunting and beautiful "The Late Great Johnny Ace", about the shooting of John Lennon, gives me chills. Such a powerful closer.
Here's a song from Hearts And Bones that's a clear harbinger of the African World Music running thrugh most of the following Graceland.

Cockburn has quite a body of music and it's an interesting journey from beginning to present. I had all his albums in vinyl up until the late 90's when my records/turntable went dormant; I later gave them away to a better home where they are hopefully being enjoyed. I've only replaced a selection on CD; especially with the older stuff, it's just not the same as pulling out the jacket and going through that vinyl ritual. His is a collection worth treasuring IMO. He's also an excellent live performer; over the years I have seen him live solo, with a band, electrified, acoustic - all great shows.
I had Trafalgar on 8-track tape! I wonder if GSP could have saved that format with its ingenuity?

A difficult task, but I'll keep my starter to ten:
1) Eels - Beautiful Freak, every track a gem and each track just moves effortlessly to the last track which is far too soon on every listen. The quality of the CD recording is excellent. 2) Cockney Rebel - The Human Menagerie. A true masterpiece produced by Alan Parsons that you can not put in to any category, sheer brilliance! 3) PJ Harvey - Stories from the city stories from the sea. Excellent pace, clear instruments and great work with Thom Yorke. A lot of emotion here. 4) Death in Vegas - The Contino Sessions. So far from mainstream but a real breath of fresh air. 5) Fun Lovin Criminals - Come find yourself. Great raw drive and energy, especially the Louis Armstrong cover! 6) Bat for Lashes - The Haunted Man - Just ahead of Florence and the M for sheer nuttiness/genius with such a haunting voice. 7) Melody Gardot - My one and only thrill. Brilliant production on the CD and great to hear Jazz, R&B and light rock and soul in one package! 8) Pink Floyd - Dark side of the Moon. Time will never cease to amaze me of its greatness. 9) Semisonic - Feeling strangely fine. Top quality recording and a great bit of rock magic throughout. 10) Babybird - There's something going on. The most under-rated writer and performer in the last 20 years - Stephen Jones .
I'll try and write the next 10 when it get some time.

There's no need to make it a full 20 I think, if you can narrow it down to just 10 then that's only impressive! I chose the number 20 just because I found making a list of 10 too hard

Lots of good lists coming! Nice to see some of my favourite artists appearing too . . .
A +1 on Ali Farka Toure: Talking Timbuktu was the album that got me into Malian and West African (and then Cuban) music as served up on World Circuit records - a label with impeccable presentation IMO.
World Circuit's Orchestra Baobab recordings are stupendous - try http://www.worldcircuit.co.uk/#Orchestra_Baobab::Made_In_Dakar - Made In Dakar . Such infectious, happy music - excellently recorded.

Wow i seem to have started something here, and some great lists and shows a variety within individual tastes.Apart from the choice of twenty favourite discs it would also be a good idea to have two or three discs you didn't quite get along with first or second listen(you're not going to be short of time to listen stuck on the mythical island)and i am not suggesting a list on a list scenario here ,i personally have three like that that i can think of:-GLUCK ORFEO ET EURIDICE JOHN ELLIOT GARINER Heard this on a episode of MORSE they must have played the best bits,BRAND X byPAT METHENY & also THE COMPLETE WORKS OF JOHN COLTRANE when does the tune start? it would be a great opportunity to re-evaluate such works What do others think?

OK, I can't resist lists so I'll play. Here are my current favourites in no particular order:
Waiting for Columbus - Little Feat Nick of Time - Bonnie Raitt Gaucho - Steely Dan Damn Right, I've got the Blues - Buddy Guy Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman Kind of Blue - Miles Davis (was this voted "Greatest Album of the 20th Century"?) The Tender Trap - Stacey Kent Beethoven Symphonies 5 and 7 - VPO, Carlos Kleiber (again!) Brahms Symphony no. 4 - VPO, Carlos Kleiber Beethoven Piano Sonatas - Paul Lewis Mozart Le Nozze di Figaro - VPO Erich Kleiber (his dad) Mozart Piano concertos - Clifford Curzon Il tenero momento (Mozart and Gluck arias) - Susan Graham Strauss Four Last Songs etc - Felicity Lott Elgar Symphony no. 2 - Halle Sir John Barbirolli Ravel Daphnis and Chloe - Boston SO Charles Munch Faure Piano Quartets - Domus Schubert String Quintet - Belcea Quartet Chopin Ballades - Artur Rubinstein
That was harder than I thought.
How about a nomination for the best Hi-Fi demo album or track, for auditioning new kit? My favourite is Bach Symphonic Transcriptions vol 2 Bournemouth SO / Serebrier. Track 1 is the Toccata and Fugue in D minor which is quite something.

Isn't WFC a later release that came after Feats? If you're sorting chronologically that is. In any case I got my copy of WFC for a steal, about £7 on swedish "ebay" in perfectly silent NM condition. I don't know if it's first issue but it looks to be from the seventies at least and it sounds stellar.

I have a 'strange' filing system which is arranged to fit whatever mood I am in and throws up some surprises:
File by genre, ie Blues, Rock, Hard Rock, Prog, Indie, Folk World, etc. I also have a 'don't file yet until played a few more times' section. Within each Genre I place all albums by an artist together but not chronologically etc
A good friend stores alphabetically without leaving gaps and I love to buy him 'l', 'm' or 'n' artists and see which way he will push half his collection to fit them in !!

Always a problem . Mine is also room. I've already since long filled the approximately 3 metres of space in my bookcase where I can fit 12" records so now I have to sort out the less played ones whenever I'm getting something new. Still I like the limit in a way, keeps my collection pretty dud free and all used. The real question is whatever do I do with the towering mountain of unwanted records and double issues. Selling them to a dealer gives you pennies on the pound.

You're more than welcome to relieve me of a few and have a cuppa if you want and have the time to spare. I do have more records than I can handle. Just be careful then not to exceed the luggage weight limitations when you fly back.

I'm not much of an Eagles fan but I thought that was a very lucid and interesting programme; rather better than the usual offerings from rock music talking heads.

As has been said before, I could probably choose a different top 20 tomorrow, but this is it for tonight. A couple of 'cheats' where I've included box sets and complete collections, but...live with it.
In no particular order...
Mahler's 8th Symphony - Klaus Tennstedt (1987) Harry Chapin - Greatest Stories Live Mahler's 5th Symphony - von Karajan (1973) Pink Floyd - Pulse Bach Motets - Harry Christophers/The 16 David Glimour - Live in Gdansk Elgar's Cello Concerto - du Pre/Barenboim Chicken Shack - 100 Ton Chicken Italian Concertos - Alison Balsom Nightwish - Imaginaerum The Ring Cycle - Georg Solti Al Stewart - Russians and Americans Saint Saens' Symphony #3 (Organ) - Dutoit/Montreal S.O. Hawkwind - Space Ritual Nicola Benedetti - The Silver Violin Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel Beethoven The 9 Symphonies - von Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic Miles Davis - In A silent Way The Great Cello Concertos - Yo-Yo-Ma Tangerine Dream - The Virgin Years 1974-1978 + 1977-1983
------------- Paul ---------- SYSTEM - Black Boxes, Silver Boxes, Wire, and some rather pretty Wooden boxes.

Perhaps it's time for a small revision of my own list. But this time I've decided to narrow it down to just 12 discs for a neater list. In no particular order.
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (First album that really "blew my mind" and showed me the real potential of music, when I was maybe 12 or 13) Beatles - Abbey Road (Never gets old) Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon Nick Drake - Bryter Layter (Hard pick as each and every one of his three albums are brilliant but this is somewhat cheerier than the others so it might be a better pick for a desert island) Steely Dan - Greatest Hits (Some days are just Steely Dan days when nothing else cuts it) Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (I'm with everyone else on this, it is the greatest Jazz album I've heard so far) Sam Cooke - Night Beat (The perfect blend of Blues and Soul, heartfelt stuff) Genesis - Selling England by the Pound (It doesn't have Supper's Ready but it's the album that got me into Genesis) Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits (Life would be just a little bit tougher without some S&G every once in a while) The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle (The soundtrack to some very fine days in my life, which reminds me I really should have made room for Rubber Soul somewhere in there) Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (Simply genius pop music, the lyrics and melodies are so simple yet strikingly evocative) Peter Gabriel - So (Something 80's as well, it was either this or Graceland)

Ah, the Zombies - an absolute classic album (I could never tire of 'Time of the Season'). They tour regularly and Colin Blunstone still has the voice of a 20 year old
Everything on Johans list is

Thanks Andrew! Yes Colin's still got a great voice, I saw them live a few years ago.
It's a real shame they split up after only two albums, Odessey is such a
fine record. And on the remastered CD version of Odessey you get a
bunch of bonus tracks consisting of odd singles and b-sides and there sure are a
lot of real gems among them as well.

Yes, just a couple of cheats, but you made 'em good ones! The complete Ring Cycle should count as 20 by itself .
