As you say, Farmed out to third party merch fulfillment company, I was thinking just that as I sent my post. But there are artists that take pride in making sure their fans get the best possible recordings. I was reading about a such band ( can't remember who) a few years ago. Their reasoning was " the fan could have bought a much cheaper recording but chose to buy expensive Vinyl" But they are probably few and far between.

Some album sources I have had good results from, Presto Music, Pure Pleasure Records - these two do mainly Jazz, Blues and Classical with a host of labels, Verve, DG, Capitol etc.
Red House Records, Gearbox records, The Vinyl Factory - check out these last two sites for loads of info re pressing machines etc, and The Merch Desk (in Wales) .
I reckon any of these will be only too happy to open and check the disc before despatch if you ask, of course if your album arrives damaged in a one use only tear off strip to open package then a roll of Gorilla tape in the kitchen drawer is a necessity. If I buy from my local HMV shop - there has been no local independent for maybe 30 years, I remove the vacuum wrap before leaving the shop and check - it has saved a few journeys. A point was made regards a big group or artist not being involved in disc quality, I ordered a Joe Bonamassa album from his web site in America and although they did everything they could to get the album to me when international lockdown was imminent in March 2020 when it did arrive the holes in each disc were the worst I have ever seen. I would have returned them had it not been international. Poor quality discs that have to be returned is bad for consumers and companies large and small - I think HMV are in their 3rd incarnation, such a pity there is apparently no organisation to lobby the manufacturers and make them listen and address the QC. Someone from ATC told me building a collection of quality vinyl recordings is a lifetimes work, I can see why when as posted people are returning the same disc 3 times. Never mind F1 tomorrow !! |

I bought a record from hmv a few years ago, When I got home I went to play it and there was scratch right across the record so the next day I took it back. The first shop assistant said I had did it myself. I asked why would I do that? A second assistant much younger had a look and said this doesn't look good at all, to me this is from the pressing plant He showed me what he was looking at and then said it looks to me like there was something stuck in a roller, I had a closer look and it wasn't a continuous scratch. He went off and came back with four of the same albums and yes all four were the same. He then said to me why the hell didn't this get picked up at the pressing plant. He said sorry we don't have a replacement I'll give you your money back he also apologized for his colleague saying he was out of order. He was also right in say this has cost you money having to bring it back.

Sounds like an unusually well versed sales person, I would imagine you would have looked for him every time you subsequently went in the store.
The H H album is now in transit to me from Diverse Vinyl in Wales. It is listed as cut by Kevin Gray and having explained to them (with attached photo) they have agreed on receiving my order to open it and check the disc before despatch. Thanks for all the input.

I don't go in there much it's more chart stuff or big artists but some times I don't have a choice as the small shops can't always get the stock as the big boys seem to get most of it. But it was the first time I have had trouble taking records back there or other things and the only time. But you are right he was well versed. As someone said on here I will start checking the record before leaving to go home from now on (this is something you can't do with online orders) but as you say most record shops would check them for you, It's got to be in their interest for good customer relations
