Just to say I'm also a Goldring user, though a 1012, with a GS Revelation M + PSU-1. (I have the RM because I play 78s.) Whatever GS phono stage you go for, do demo with the PSU-1 rather than the basic power supply.

Ok, pretty much answering my own question, but by way info for others:

Took advantage of the wonderful loan scheme offered (many thanks John C!). Have a GS Reflex M with PSU1 on trial. Very interesting, was concerned this quality of phono stage would highlight inadequacies in my system (it's only an early Planar 3 with newish cartridge after all).
I've been listening to a variety of vinyl, finding tracks like Gates of Delirium by Yes is far less harsh/brash than going straight to phono in on my Roksan integrated amp, Kind of Blue sounds far more refined, the 'soundsatage' even better- I'm hearing the detail of each instrument far more, with Coltrane's sax sounding very smooth. Listening to Quincey Jone's 'Big band bossa nova' was really improved in many ways. Also tried some King Tubby for the bass, the Reflex handles this well too.
Overall- yes it's better, in terms of £-to-gains ratio it's definitely worth the money, I'll be buying one. The loan scheme is great.

Thanks all, Gareth

P.S. John C- I'll be boxing up and returning the unit, early next week. Thanks for your help.

Great to hear, Gareth. I wouldn't put the Planar down as inadequate. I recall a very long time ago I demo-ed a Planar 3 and was very impressed with it. I didn't go for it in the end, as I was also looking for a 78-rpm option which Rega only make as a separate turntable. Small house, small rooms, I don't have room for two!
