Hi all, I currently run a Roksan K2 integrated and K2 power amp, bi-amping Monitor Audio Gold 300's. As source I'm using an old Planar 3 ('S' shape tone arm) with a Goldring 10-40 (MM) cartridge. Upgrades to turntable and then amps are some way off due to funds and other expensive hobbies.... so in the mean time was wondering if I were to add a Graham Slee phono stage, would there be a noticeable improvement to my sound- I listen to a variety although a bias towards jazz of the late 50's, 'avant garde' e.g. Stockhausen and occasionally some bossanova. Your thoughts would be most welcome.

From my experience, I couldn't believe the improvement going to a GS external phono stage. At that time I had a Rega Planar 1 ('90s vintage), Nagaoka cartridge and Cambridge amp.  A trial of the Reflex M had me sold but eventually went foe an Accession for the extra facilities.  The forum members trial is well worth using to find out what is best for you.

Many thanks for the reply, I'll certainly look into an external- just got to read through all the variants.

Gareth, how many hours does your 1040 stylus have on it? Goldring still make the 1000 series cartridges (the 1040 was replaced by the 1042) and any of those replacement styli IIRC, should fit a 1040 cartridge body.

If you do decide to go for the loan program and try out one of the GS phonos, I would make sure your stylus is reasonably fresh and not worn out. If you're not sure about the hours on it, I'd get a new one even if it "sounds okay" just to be absolutely sure.

RE: which phono stage to choose that depends on your budget and what features you might want/need. You would need to plug it into one of the line inputs of your integrated amp.
Reflex M + PSU-1 used with AT150-40ML, AT VM95ML, Stanton 680mkII + Ogura, and Shure M35X cartridges.

I went with a Reflex M with my Roksan Kandy LIII and Goldring 1042. The difference was astounding.

Okay good. Sounds like you are good to go for the loan program then. I can confirm the Reflex M works well with Goldring 1000 series cartridges, even though I don't have my Goldring 1042 anymore.
