The mono switch is very important for mono records, in my experience. Firstly, I hear less surface noise and it is uniform in both ears, what makes it easier to ignore. Secondly, I am listening mono with only one speaker. Compared to a stereo setting whereby the signal comes from one of the channels, the summed signal seems richer and more dynamic somehow.

The switched (summed) mono function, L+R/2 equates to L/2 + R/2.
Any difference signal or non-common signal (due to some form of error) is therefore divided by 2, but the signal common to both channels is not. |
