Very little experience of MC, only ever had one, an Audio Technica in a Roksan Xerxes/Tabriz, until it suffered the droop never really convinced me.
Have tried several MMs, Pickering, Shure, Ortofon etc but always return to the Goldring 1042. The only reason I can think of is that it appears to be a good all round cartridge. Have used in Thorens TD 160 MK11, Rega 3, Linn Sondek, and currently in a Gyro Dec/Tecnoarm.
As you can see I'm not into really exotic stuff. Chancellors of the Exchequer keep taking my spending money from me
Rest of my system is original Audiolab 8000S and 8000P ( biamped ), Quad 22L2s, Naim 3.5 CD plus power supply. Oh!! and of course the new INTRO !
So you can see some of it has been with me some time.
Have a second system with Project Debut, with Ortofon ??, Musical Fidelity E100 amp ( which I may sell soon ) and mission 780s.
While typing this listening to Herbie Hancock going very nicely through the Into.
Adrian.
Not a technical type!

Variety is the spice and all that
And besides, you struck me as a Robin Hood fan ( or was it Maid Marion? )
Adrian.
INTRO - seems to be burning in nicely.

To understand the differences between moving coil and moving magnet phono cartridges may I recommend my article "All About The Phono Preamp", which goes into quite some depth about vinyl reproduction in general. I feel it's worth settling down with a cup or glass of your favourite beverage for anyone who seriously wants to hear the best from their vinyl. "All About The Phono Preamp" also features an interesting link to an article by Kevin Gray who is a record mastering engineer behind some well known "yesteryear" (70's - 80's) musicians.

So what's the mm vs mc all about? It had already been settled since you like mm. For me, I'll take a mc anytime as it does sound better in my system.

At one time I found the Sonotone 9TAHC ceramic cartridge sounded good in my system...

I used to think the transistor radio hung on the quarter window of the '56 Holden playing Dusty Springfield was pretty damn good too.
Seems as my hearing deteriorates, my gear needs to improve to compensate I do admit I'm not trying too hard, but I have yet to hear a MM that sounds near as good as my Denons do at anywhere near the price. A friend who formerly used a Shure V15 VxMR agreed when I loaned him a DL110 to try - he bought his own as a result - and don't kick too much Graham, I also loaned him my Era Gold V and he is now going to buy a Reflex as a result. I rather hope he hurries up as he won't give me the EGV back |
