Hi! A while back I decided to upgrade my vinyl rig. You know- Covid times... Now I´m using Accession MM, vintage broadcast turntable (Technics SP15 in SH15-B3 plinth) and a new Audiomods Series 6 tonearm (micrometer version). I decided to reuse my backup cartridge (AT 120 E/T) + the rest of original carts (AT VM540 Ml and Stanton 500Al for 78s) for the time being. And now it´s time for new cart. Audiomods 6 doesn´t support classic headshells - although system of cartridge plates is quite a flexible! - so I tend to different decision. To acquire one of the top MM carts and to retain necessary backup (incl. Stanton for shellac records). I consider e. g. Audio Note IQ 2/3, Clearaudio Maestro v 2, Audio Technica VM760 SLC and Nagaoka MP 500. Clearadio Charisma and Music Maker are too expensive. I appreciate any tip, advice. One question regarding Audio Note IQ3: one of the members is user of IQ3 + Goldring 1042 stylus as backup. Is it possible to use even cheaper Goldring styli in IQ body? E.g. 1012/1022 GX. Or 1006 eliptical tip? I have decent collection of old mono microgroove records from 50s and I don´t want to destroy delicate /and pricey/ IQ3/1042 stylus. Best regards Michal

I don’t know the answer to your question, but be aware, in case you don’t know, that the cartridge for the IQ1, 2 & 3 is the same. It’s only the stylus assembly that differs.

I haven't heard any of them, but I've been told that the new AT 700 series is very good. Would love to hear if anyone has any experience?

The new AT700 series is the old AT150.
It's good.

Hi Michal I wasn't signed up to the forum when you posted your enquiry. I understand that the Audionote is built by Goldring to Audionote's spec, using their 1000-series body as a base. The various cartridges in the 1000 series share the same body, the difference between models being the stylus. The styli are interchangeable, having the same push-fit mount. I use a G1012GX (and like you an AT120E, and Stanton 505s for 78s). But you probably know all this and more by now! Some say the G1042GX requires more effort to set up correctly, but I've never tried one, although I have found that the G1012GX sounds better when VTF is set at 1.9gms rather than the recommended 1.75gms. Of concern to others is that the G1000 series rides low, close to the record, but I've never had a problem. The G1012GX isn't the best with early mono, IMHO, can pick up surface noise, I suppose it's tracking the bottom of the groove. I'm considering an AT VM610 mono for that. |

Apologies to you both for reposting tonight. Those 1000 bodies are good value as they last and I think it is a MORish sound. Plus you can indeed put any of those styli in them. |

Hi all, it’s been a while!
I’m planning to purchase a new stylus soon, to replace my existing AT ML440a which I have been quite happy with. Without spending a fortune any recommendations for an upgrade on this stylus (say £400 max). My system is a modified SL1210M5G with SME 309 tone arm all running through GSP amps and cables into MSPhil’s old Missions. Many thanks Les Edit: See next post
