I am planning to buy a Majestic to use with fairly other modest components.
My query is that where there are options in cabling choice,is there a preferred priority order for optimum sound in choosing between co -axial,optical or USB?

There is a difference in which sample rates the inputs can handle natively.

Coax inputs handle up to 24/192

Optical (Toslink) input 1 can handle up to 24/192, but you need to specifically order this (otherwise it's 24/96) - the other optical inputs will handle up to 24/96

USB can handle up to 24/48

The leads to the question of which components are you planning to hook up to the Majestic?

The Apple devices bit is the bit that intrigues me.

The Apple devices bit is the problem, connectivity has a different meaning in Apple world. The high quality reproduction of sound does not appear to have priority in their orchard. That's only my opinion, YMMV; but I don't think I'm alone.
Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

As I see it you'd need a specialised dock to extract SPDIF from the Apple kit.
Something like an rDock-uni (a now discontinued product), which might work fine with an old style iPod to Lightning adapter.

Either that or an Airplay receiver unit with SPDIF or Toslink output.

I do have an AirPlay receiver, but Graham's comments appear to indicate the kiss of death to anything other than a cable connection.
