Test fit this morning of the new rear panels with 4mm posts. I drilled holes and worked out where the gap between the capacitors needs to be. On both speakers I have taken out the original 50uF capacitor and associated glue blob to make space. I can see I will need to reposition one speaker's inductor nearer the edge of the cavity. Not a quick job for this morning so I reassembled in time for listening to a couple of songs!

This morning I carefully prised that inductor out and cut back the blob of eighties glue. A thin layer of the mdf remained stuck to the underside of the coil bobbin so I just used a wood glue to reattach the coil close to the edge. That gives enough space for the capacitors and new terminals when I do the swap over.

I fitted the replacement capacitors today: 7 x 6u8 and 1 x 2u2 to get the original 50uF. Lots of soldering and a little cutting with a sharp chisel to expand the deepest part of the cavity. I also simplified the wiring so just two wires go the input terminals.

Initial listening was fine, slightly brighter than before due to the new caps. Good stereo image so the crossover parts are connected right and all in correct phase. Best of all I have modern hifi terminals without a large capacitor hanging off the back of each panel!

Early start on the final steps on my SMGa's, at least for now. I removed the covers or 'socks' so I could iron out the creases. A good hoover to get any sawdust and accumulated dust/muck, followed by black marker pen on any shiny bits. Then I reassembled the speakers, trimming and stapled down the ends of the socks with clear tape on top. Badges back on and all done.

I took some photos of the work in progress including a schematic of the finished version. I'll downsize and upload them when I'm next on my PC.

Sorry that I have not posted the photos yet. I took some useful photos during the work but not of the final install of the parts. I need to reopen one of the speakers, removing tape and staples. To be continued...
