It's a good question. I think it would be levelling the main plinth or base and the floating chassis/bearing/platter/tonearm.

And connect the motor directly to the sub chassis? Why??

Well it’s hardly directly connecting. All sorts of sorbothane bobbins and non metallic isolating stuff in between

Hamish Robertson (that's another story!) decided, probably through lots or research and testing, that a sprung subchassis was perfect. Why change it?
Years ago I fitted a set of L*nn LP12 springs and mountings to my Ariston turntable because the originals were  bit "tired". A perfect fit.Ermm I wonder why?
As an aside and out of curiosity - why is the "i" always substituted by an asterisk?
Doesn't happen with Vera Lynn.Smile
