Having about 1,000 vinyl albums doing nothing for the past few years...converted to Cd and MP3. I have decided to tread the turntable route again, although in a delicate fashion...this means low cost options, but with a fair amount of quality.
My knowledge of turntables and mm or mc cartridges is so outdated that I could do with a little prodding in the right direction.
Is there a member out there that could throw me some lifelines?
My listening is somewhat eclectic ranging from thrash to classical although I would fall mainly into to prog to psychedelic rock, with a fair smattering of everything in-between.
Budget...what budget....its a case of finding out what might suite me and then finding the budget to match.

Any takers?

There are so many possible answers to this. I started my son off with a second hand Technics SL-DL1 (eBay) plus new stylus and I built him a DAK Genera. All sorted for a total of less than £200.

Cheers Ifor,
A place to start, what stylus would you use with the technics, all things considered?

The Audio Technica AT95E is an excellent sounding low cost MM cartridge on sale for around £25.

It works well with the Genera too.
That none should be able to buy or sell without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

Most of the second hand Technics linear trackers seem to come with their original cartridges and it's easy enough to get a replacement stylus e.g. http://www.stylusplus.co.uk/technics-sldl1-record-player-stylus-styli-needles-1494-p.asp

The SL-QL1 or SL-7 are better than the SL-DL1 (quartz lock speed control), but do sell for a bit more. If you see one for sale that states that the arm doesn't move it probably just needs a new arm drive belt which are easy to get and not too fiddly to fit.

Bob (morris_minor) might chip in; he's more knowledgeable than me.

Which turntables have you heard and liked?
Jon

Open mind and ears whilst owning GSP Genera, Accession M, Accession MC, Elevator EXP, Solo ULDE, Proprius amps, Cusat50 cables, Lautus digital cable, Spatia cables and links, and a Majestic DAC.

Well Jon,
Donkey years ago had a Goldring GL75, then for a while GL85 after that a Technics sldl1k ( I think it was K) with a Shure cartridge.
I have only listened to a couple of Rega Planar and P******t decks so far, but am going to aim for something semi auto... Auto return I think...so quite happy to mouch about until I come up with something or a suggestion comes up that fits my bill, so to speak, I don't mind too much if it has a built in phono stage but would prefer to use an external phono pre-amp.like I have said before I would /will be on a tight budget and don't really want to get the bug again YET !...I already see valve amps and new speakers haunting my bank balance....Gawd help meWink
