I just purchased a second hand Reflex M with the upgraded power supply from eBay, I have been experimenting with phono stages recently so do have others (Cambridge duo, P******t DS2) what was immediately noticeable when plugging the reflex M in was a very loud buzz and hum, when I grounded it to the TT this reduced to a hum.

At 12 o’clock on the volume dial it is very loud, luckily I never need to listen that high and it does not affects the music as far as I can tell.  It is though at normal volumes more noticeable than others that I have now and have had before, the Cambridge duo in particular is practically silent even if it is not grounded.

Wondering if this is expected from the reflex M or if I may have purchased a faulty one?

Many thanks

Not normal for a Reflex M. Please van you tell us more about your system like amp, interconnects, turntable?

The Reflex M should be silent.
It sounds like it could be faulty.

Thanks Neil. Sorry to disagree but unplugging the turntable leads and turning the volume up is not a good diagnostic. I hope following helps you.

Please can you swap the cables over then connect the turntable to the preamp. Play some songs from a record at your normal volume. Switch the amp to a silent input.  Unplug the turntable from the wall socket and switch the amp back to the line input you are using for the Reflex M. Can you hear any hum at your normal listening seat? Try disconnecting the turntable's ground wire from the Reflex M, is the hum quieter or louder? Go with the quieter option. Plug the turntable back into the mains, any chane to the hum? Switch it on, is the hum louder?

Thanks, I'll try those steps later.  I have already done some to ber fair, also I have not unplugged the leads and tuned the volume up, all my testing has been with everything plugged in so far. It is worse with the ground disconnected for sure.  I'll try your other suggestions later.

Thanks again

I will ask what might be a stupid question, but you have connected the Reflex M to the correct output on the SL1500C?

And is the output switch still in the correct place?

And what happens if you disconnect the power from the SL1500C with everything else still powered on?
