I'm happy to say I just completed a Genera phono stage which is now happily settling into my system. Right now the sound is a little rough around the edges, but as we all know it takes time for it to mellow.
With spending so much time at home under our current conditions, I've been listening to my vinyl and found I was not happy with what I was hearing, so I thought a good phono stage would help. I had been using the built in stage on my Marantz SR7012 which is not bad, but certainly not good, so the search was on. Performing a not so quick search on the internet I focused in on Graham's products but what sold me was his design philosophy, so it actually was an easy decision. Now my wife provided some input, basically a maximum $ amount. So after some discussion, and my need for new projects to keep me busy, we decided I would go for the Genera kit with the caveat that should we like the sound, we'd start saving to move up the line. Now just so you understand my dilemma, my wife's hearing leaves dogs in awe. Her sensitivity is at least 3db below a 'normal' person and her bandwidth goes well above, so this is going to be quite a test. It has been several decades since I worked on circuit boards and had some fairly good skills with the soldering iron, so I thought I could regain the skills necessary for the project. Well, maybe not so much. The soldering skills were good, but I experienced a wee problem with two resistors (R5 390K and R8 390) which I had inavertenly switched. Now don't go off, it' only a one color band difference on small resistors, but it took the help of John and Graham to resolve the issue. So many thanks for their patience in helping me. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Welcome to the forum James,
You're not the first to get those resistors mixed up, ask me how I know. My Genera still gives excellent sound and when I first heard it was a true revelation. The process takes up to 2 weeks or so, but I'm sure that once it's burned in you'll both appreciate it's qualities. It does gradually improve even further over the following months. Happy Listening Ian

Great. I've read about this resistor swap so will have to be careful when I make the plunge. Let us know how the burn in goes!

Welcome to the forum James. I bought and built the first Genera and loaned it out to several people after I moved up to a Revelation M. Even with white desk lighting I always use a multimeter to confirm parts before installing, learned that several decades ago after a few silly mistakes I made. |
