I'm sure that this has come up before, but with the year anniversary of Prince's untimely passing - this has been doing the rounds - https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/28/arts/music/prince-guitar-rock-hall-of-fame.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&_r=1

Is this the greatest guitar solo of all time?

Oh, Lord... so many to choose from!

First of all, do we want to distinguish apples from oranges? The Prince solo was a live performance. Can we compare that to studio recordings? How many live performances have never been captured on disc, film, or now the ubiquitous YouTube? There are probably so many people who could say, 'The best solo I ever heard was so-and-so performing at such-and-such.'

With that said, I'll throw this one out for most influential live guitar solo - Jimi Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.

Among my personal favorites - maybe not the best, but it came as such a surprise when I found out who was playing: Stevie Ray Vaughan on David Bowie's 'Let's Dance'.

Great topic, I am amazed in hindsight we haven['t had it before! My favourite solos are the ones that lift the song and there are so many. Prince's solos are very impressive and about the best thing on that Batman sound track album IMO. I'd go for a number of Hendrix solos but it would be a long list, lots of Clapton, and Angus Young's solos especially the albums up to Back in Black. Eddie Van Halen's solos from the earlier albums are pretty impressive if you like that sort of thing. And I'd have to put some Joe Bonamassa solos in there having been introduced to his music by people on this forum.

Jon

Open mind and ears, whilst owning GSP Genera, Accession, Elevator EXP, Solo UL, Proprius amps, Cusat50 cables, Lautus digital cable, Spatia cables and links. and a Majestic DAC.
