looking for owner feedback on the
Graham Slee Era Gold MK V phono pre-amp.
I have seen Michael Fremer's review. I am looking for a phone stage that is revealing but not bright or etchy. I generally like a tube sound...while not opposed to really good solid state gear. I am a fan of hybrid system pre-amps too. I have a VPI scout jr turntable with an Ortofon 2m bronze stylus...Audio Research solid state amp....Audio Research hybrid pre-amp...and Thiel speakers. My current phono stage is a Musical Fidelity LX-LPS. I welcome feedback on how the Graham Slee will pair with my system. |

Hi Gregory and welcome to the Forum.
The best way to judge whether the ERA Gold suits you would be to listen to one in your system in the comfort of your own home for a week or so. That's something made possible by Grahams' unique Loan Scheme. If you're in the UK contact Jon aka Fatmangolf who runs the UK loan scheme. Just send him a PM to request a loan of whatever you want to try. Sending a Private Message - PM can be done by clicking the arrow next to his name on any of his posts. have a look in the Loan Programme pages or use the member search to find him. Happy Listening Ian |

whilst the EGV is very good (I had one) until upgrade to revelation/reflex I found a far bigger jump to the accession. If possible may be within budget I would try and loan one too -there may be some for sale from members upgrading to the new Accessipn MC soon also.

Hi Gregory & welcome,
A few years ago I changed from a well regarded valve phono stage - an EAR 834 (I think that no. is correct), to an Era Gold V & didn't regret it. In my system the EAR was pleasant but a little too soft & woolly sounding & the Era Gold seemed to clear ,tidy, & sharpen up the sound without introducing any brightness or etch. As Ian says, the loan scheme is a great way to audition the ERA Gold. Cheers. Edited by RichW - 30 Jul 2018 at 5:23pm |

Another welcome from me, Gregory!
I see from your IP that you're in the US - so Bruce (BAK) is the guy you should PM for the loan scheme. And see this post too. I've got an Era Gold V, Reflex M and Accession. Each offers a step up. They all sound very "un-solid state" while not being "tubey". Just very natural - they get out of the way of the music.
