Sorry, I'm a bit of an impatient old reactionery, so I'd say throw the Wadia as hard as you (or a friend) can at the salesperson who sold it you - so hard it hurts!
It's output must be a mere whisper. But, you know, mankind is a great respector of names.... |

That none should be able to buy or sell without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

I don't think the Wadia itransport has a dac in it so I guess that the Analogue out is from the IPOD itself, have you tried turning up the volume on the Ipod ( I don't know of the Idock interface bypasses the volume control).
If the Yamaha has some sort of stero tape out you could plug your Solo into that to confirm the Solo + HD800 is ok, perhaps you can also plug the Digital out from the IDock into one of the digital inputs of your Yamaha which will answer your question about the external dac. I use my Solo from the Tape out of my Stereo amp and must confess I'm not sure if that is a line output level, perhaps someone can answer whether you can use any sort of line level to feed into the Solo or perhaps the Pre out from the Yamaha? The Dacs should be better as they would probably output 2v or so. The below thread mentions the HD800 so it shouldn't be a prob with the solo + hd800. http://www.gspaudio-community.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=635&PID=4731#4731 |

Just to say that I settled on the PS Audio DL3 DAC that Miguel mentioned above. It arrived yesterday and I couldn't wait to test the system out -- I was absolutely gob-smacked! The Solo's volume was increased by some 20% I'd say, so that was no longer a problem with me.
There is one thing though -- the iPod's volume control obviously doesn't work (ServerBaboon). However, its equaliser *does*! Surely by bypassing the analogue signal and taking the pure digital out it shouldn't be involved?! Must contact them. Another interesting point: listening to Apple Lossless as opposed to 320kbps mp3 I find there's very little difference in quality!! Roy P |

Roy, it takes a while for not only the components to burn in but also for our ears to learn how to distinguish from good to great sound. Do not give up on lossless files, let your ear and brains get used to the differences so they can start noticing them.
