Hi, I'm in my second year with an Accession mm bought to connect my lockdown fever Beogram 8000 turntable purchase to my mainly L*nn system but new to the forum.
I have a Solo SRG II headphone amp with basic power supply. I'm interested in upgrading it. Which should come first, an upgraded power supply or the diamond upgrade kit? Also, if I buy the upgrade kit, does anyone know if its possible to buy a case and knob to accommodate the old board?
Thanks
Steve

Hello Steve,

I have a Solo SRGII that was originally powered using the basic power supply. I upgraded it to a PSU1 a year or so ago and found that the difference is significant  -  and by significant, I mean better. Better clarity, separation, soundstage and realism.

I can't comment on the ULDE board as I haven't made that modification but I can wholeheartedly recommend the power supply upgrade. Also, I suspect that the ULDE modification would be compromised by continuing to use a basic power supply anyway.

Good luck
Peter

Welcome Steve. I would second Peter's comments about the Solo models, I tried them when I ran the UK loan scheme. They were all very good and the PSU1 improves them.

Hi Steve
The ULDE is only sold new with the PSU1 so I would second Peter's comments also. I can't comment on a PSU1 up grade as I bought my Solo with it. But the combination is very good. So I would say a PSU1 up grade should be your first port of call and see how you like it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Hello Steve and welcome to the forum.
Upgrading to the PSU1 will bring a more noticeable improvement than changing to the ULDE. The ULDE as an upgrade from the SRGII is a more subtle change.
The SRG board can rehoused in commonly available extruded aluminium boxes, but the fascia and backplate will have to be drilled with suitable holes. Quite an easy task if you have the tools and skills for simple metalwork.
Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice everyone, think I'll go with the power supply and take it from there.

The Ultra-Linear Diamond Edition has a lower noise floor to benefit low impedance loads and in-ear monitors. The need for it over the SRG and former Ultra-Linear depends on what type of headphone is being driven. A PSU1 upgrade would likely provide more significant improvement.

I might be completely crazy but I thought I preferred the Solo UL to the Solo ULDE after using both (with PSU1). Although I used Sennheiser HD540II with the ULDE and AKG K1000 with the UL, which is not a fair comparison. The K1000 was a huge step up.
