I have always wondered that back in the hey day for vinyl say 70's, 80,s was there a determined effort for phono amplification improvement ?
Where the high end companies like Crown , McIntosh, Mark Levinson , Conrad Johnson and Bryston to name a few making ground breaking circuit designs ? Or has it been just in the last decade we have seen truly remarkable improvements such as Graham Slee masterpieces

I think in the 70-80s a lot of us just use to use the built in ones in the amps we had I know I did, But back then I only had a Midi system where the record player was part of the box or it was a separate on top of the main unit, I can't remember. All I do know was back in the 80s where I lived HiFi shops were expensive and to me on a limited budget it was a shop you never went into. We had shops like Dixons and a few others like Tandy but other than that you got your HiFi fix from a department store. My 1st HiFi separates system was CD player, amp and speakers in the late 80s and I think that cost me over £500 but I was starting to earn good money and working a lot of overtime to pay for it.

Welcome ........the ' recording '' may not have allowed for better Phono  pre amp.....Mono gramophone in 60's and Stereo recording/MXING were basic in 70'S.  RIAA equalisation became the issue ........but Separate system components accentuated and evolved with new resistors and capacitors and                  ' revolutionise ' by what can be achieved with tin can call '' Graham Slee 2 Special End. The budget stretch to audiophile ''Verve'' and 180 gm audiophile pressings........

Welcome aboard. I have some old amps from the 1970's and 1980's when phono, tape, and tuner were the sources. Must revisit them but I think they'll pale against Graham's preamps as you say.
