Consider a home trial of Bitzie with both Lautus USB and Lautus Powerwire cables. This is a very educational arsenal because you can hear for yourself whether an external 5V power supply audibly improves the performance compared to 5V bus-power from the computer. Also, for headphones of similar impedance/sensitivity, you can plug two headphones into the front at the same time and compare side-by-side; a powerful yet simple facility. Some devices will convey the Bitzie's full ability whilst others audibly hold it back. Have a play.

It also highlights how important a good digital-to-analogue converter is for handling micro-signals and passing them on as resolved as possible for full amplification.
