My CD-player is connected to my Majestic via coaxial S/PDIF cable. When I put in the CD and push play, I hear two loud clicking noises as the player selects the track it is going to play. I guess this is normal, but still I would like to know if there is something I might be doing wrong here, because one never really knows until one is completely sure.

Hi Jan, I was away when you posted this question and I only just noticed it now.
Rather than these non-audio noises being muted by the player (or other source), it is expected that the DAC chipset will detect them and mute them. Due to me running the Cirrus (Wolfson) WM8804/WM8741 chipset in hardware mode, it would seem that the maximum allowed hardware mode clock signal is too slow for the non-audio detection to react (although the data sheet infers it will). The prototypes had the non-audio pin tied to the mute pin as required, but it made absolutely no difference. The only way of increasing clock signal was to use the chipset in microprocessor control mode, except that would mean including a microprocessor along with all its peripherals, when all I wanted was a stand-alone high performance DAC with no microprocessor or its noise. So the mute pin was taken to the manual switch on the front panel instead. Therefore if the source doesn't mute non-audio signals you will hear the non-audio noises when the playback begins. I did consider whether such noises could damage anything but concluded that there are "worse" noises contained in some of the modern electronic music: songs by such as Massive Attack and Evanescence feature some "speaker bending" transients, and I would think audio manufacturers have that base covered. |

Hi Graham,
Thank you very much for your reply. I do get it now, even though the technical details go a bit over my head. But I do understand they are necesssary for an exhaustive explanation that would be of use to other (technically savvy) users. And we would not expect otherwise from you of course :-) Kind regards, Jan
