Entirely dependent on the turntable and your tastes, in my experience. A friend runs an Acoustic Signature Manfred, where the weight/clamp adds solidity to the image and a degree of quietness. On my Rega it spells death to music...

My experiance is that weights change the sound, rather than improving it. For me the music was worse. 

The other thing to remember is that a heavy weight is putting more load onto the bearing.
