dear All,
Thanks to John, I recently received a new cable for my Focal Elear headphones. My main motivation was simply to have something shorter, as the stock cable is 3m. Reviews all suggest it’s a really good cable and need not be upgraded. However, over the course of a few weeks I’ve come to disagree.

In trying to describe the difference in performance, it’s easiest to simply say that John’s cable is just more musically involving. I don’t find myself distracted, or reading, but participating. The foot tapping, physically moving your insides with emotional response, etc, is much easier to come by.

Pinning down actual aural differences is harder. The sound exhibits a great deal more focus - instruments bleed into each other much less than with the standard cable, and they have more colour and intensity. More meat on the bones, as it were. For orchestral recordings these cables sit you farther back in the hall, so it’s also more integrated. The stock cable is very wide and tall of soundstage, but lacks the elements I’ve just described.

Frequency balance seems identical. I can’t locate any instruments which are de/emphasised or any shifts in impact/articulation/leading edges. All I know is that John’s cable makes more sense of an integrated whole, without losing any individual threads within it.

Why? Cable length? Impedance? Shielding? The fact is I don’t really care. I’m just happy to be happy.

So, more musically involving and just as detailed than the stock cable.
Thanks, John!
Cheers,
Mick.
