What better way to go than playing at your own wake?  He collapsed on stage at the end of a concert celebrating his 70th birthday.

Although never personally achieving much public recognition, he leaves an enduring legacy through his mentoring of musicians and influence on the jam band scene.

Heaven's band just got stronger and its jams will probably go on a little longer now.
