I'm curious if anyone else has a thing for what can happen when someone covers a song in a totally unique or unexpected way?  It has always been one of my passions to discover new and unusual treatments of familiar music.  I especially love whole albums of cover versions that thematically form a unified whole.  I'll throw out a couple of examples of some of the things that are always on my playlist to see if this stimulates any interesting discussion.

- Red, Hot, & Blue - Cole Porter reinterpreted by the likes of Nineh Cherry, Iggy Pop, Fine Young Cannibals, among others.

- Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from start to finish reggae-style.  (If you like this, have you heard their cover of Dark Side of the Moon? Wink)

- Petra Haden Sings:  The Who Sell Out - This could be my all time favorite.  An a cappella recreation of the entire album - voices, instruments, even the little radio ads between the songs; created on an 8-track tape recorder over three years.  I've scared people away playing this for them, but if you give it a serious listen all the way through, it may grab you.

Any others?

Here are a couple from my jazz corner; both focusing on Miles Davis:

Miles From India.

Miles Espanol - New Sketches of Spain

Love 'em or hate 'em?
